Yesterday was my third time visiting and I really enjoyed it every time! Visiting on a weekday during the workday was wonderful because it was so empty and extra peaceful. The few people around were very kind and welcoming about exploring the temple and the volunteer at the gift shop was super inviting about returning for future upcoming events such as their English events on Sundays. This has become my favorite temple in Houston and even though it's far from me it's more than worth the drive! It feels so immersive, like being in Asia instead of Houston. I look forward to returning again and again and to continuing to support the gift shop.
Beautiful temple and grounds. So incredibly peaceful and everything is well maintained and visitor friendly. So many statues, and educational and spiritual literature and plaques to read and learn about the temple and religion. The visitor center and gift shop are open 10am to 4pm daily, and have the cutest items you can buy at very reasonable prices. Cash Only - no card readers.
Quan Am is a cast concrete statue in Chùa Việt Nam, Vietnamese Buddhist Center in Sugar Land,Houston, Texas . The sculpture depicts the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara in female form standing on a lotus pedestal. She may also be commonly known by her Chinese name Guanyin. It was created by sculptor Mai Chi Kim, who wanted to work on a bigger project after the temple had commissioned several smaller statues from her. With the base included, the statue stands at 72 feet tall, making it one of the tallest statues in the United States, and looks over a large pond beside an ornate red bridge. It held the claim to being the largest Buddhist statue in the Western Hemisphere, until 2021 when Brazil completed construction of the second tallest Buddha statue in the world. It is the sixth tallest statue in the United States as of 2021. Quan Am is one of the most highly revered bodhisattvas in Vietnam and is called by many epithets, including 'Mother of Buddhas' and 'Goddess of Compassion'.
Had a great experience, it's a beautiful temple with a peaceful environment, what we thought would be a quick visit turned into 2 hours, would definitely recommend, they have a small shop with various kinds of statues as well.
A serene and peaceful experience — the Buddhist temple radiates tranquility. Left feeling calm, centered, and grateful.
