At the peak of its use, Alcatraz island was said to be a maximum-security prison meant for high-profile inmates who were hard to be contained elsewhere. Escape from this prison was believed to be next to Impossible given the cold and strong currents of the bay. Before the federal prison, it was a U.S. military fort and military prison from the 1850s, built to protect San Francisco Bay. From 1969 to 1971, a group called Indians of All Tribes occupied the island, claiming it under treaty rights, which became a landmark event in the Native American civil rights movement. Currently, it's a major tourist attraction offering cellhouse tours, gardens, and exhibits on its complex past.

We debated adding this to our day because of the price, but it was worth it. The ferry crew may let you go early if you arrive early, which was nice. Only about a 10 minute ride. The guided tour by Jim was very interesting. The park staff was very friendly and helpful. If you do the audio tour do not push any buttons other than pause and play, or you will mess it all up. Overall very well done, it felt very authentic and well perserved.

Make sure to buy tickets in advance. Great attraction. Takes about 2-3 hours. Ferry ride is quick. It is a quick self guided audio tour. I really enjoyed it. Big fan of the movie the rock. I recommend watching it first.

Awesome attraction. The history of this place is amazing, and the audio guide in the main jail building is very interesting and not too long. You can enter a number of cells and see how the prisoners had to live. Views back across the city are beautiful and the boat ride there and back gives a great chance to see all the landmarks of the city. I would strongly recommend this to anyone who has the time when visiting SF.

This tour was a lot of fun. Enjoyed learning the history of the prison and hearing stories of other things that happened. A nice ride out and great photo ops. Book your tickets ahead and plan on spending at least 2 hours to do the walking tour and self guided tour.
