The service is well-organized and makes for an unconventional half-day trip. You have the odd contrast of the white-knuckle buckaroo ride of the speedboat (definitely bring a waterproof jacket with hood, and definitely don't go if you have spinal issues or can't grip handlebars) and the slow-paced walk around Flat Holm. On our trip, there was a tour guide; I don't know if a guide is present on every trip. You can either follow the guide or walk around at your own leisure. There is just enough to see in the given time, especially if you pause a lot to take photos. Youngsters might not find the island particularly stimulating unless they're enthusiastic about searching for the remains of wartime gun posts. There is one loo and a place to buy tea and coffee (bringing your own food and drink is fine). Bring walking boots, as the terrain is uneven with spiky grass stumps, as well as a hat and gloves--the Bristol Channel can bring in a strong chill factor.

Absolutely amazing trip to Flatholm Island. Staff and crew very friendly, professional and reassuring. The island is brilliant and the ride over in the rib was also really fun. Wonderful day out.

We were extremely lucky to have had an amazing sunny day at steep holm. The speed boat takes you comfortably from Penarth marina to Steep holm and the travel itself is quite nice both in the morning and in the evening. The only thing that I did not appreciated had been the long waiting time to return to Cardiff. There were only 2 speed boats and before taking us back to Cardiff the speed boats needed to do two round trips to Weston super mare to bring back those who departed from there. I understand that due to the nice weather there were many people, but waiting on the beach from 7pm until 9.20pm was tiring. Especially when the tide was riding quite fast. I think it could have been better organised, but might have been an exception due to nice weather and big demand. Overall great time at steep holm, however for the boat trip £45 seems a bit excessive.

What a wonderful day out! As tempting as it was to roll back to sleep when the alarm went off at 05:30 to be at the causeway for 06:15, I'm so glad I didn't! The sunrise was beautiful, the team were warm and funny, and made everybody feel at ease with one another. There were nice little touches such as the playing of the Jurassic Park theme tune as we approached Steep Holm and all of its majestic beautiful, and generally being there to answer any questions about the island that people had. I was worried that twelve hours on the island was going to drag, but it was a surprisingly beautiful opportunity to slow down and enjoy the numerous trails taking in the history and natural beauty of Steep Holm. If I lived closer, I could certainly see myself becoming a volunteer there! Thank you for a fabulous day!

An absolutely brilliant experience!! £12 per person and worth every penny! It's exhilarating, but also relaxing in parts and allows you to view Cardiff Bay/Atlantic Wharf/Penarth from a different and stunning angle. I took my 9 year old cousin on it and she had the time of her life singing along to 'Danger zone' whilst riding the waves! I live in Cardiff and will be strongly recommending this to anyone that visits, even if it's just to go back on it myself!
