I brought in a film camera for evaluation already having a good sense of what the issue was, and I even mentioned this during the visit. Despite that, the inspection was very brief and did not seem to meaningfully engage with the issue I described. I was quickly given a quite high repair estimate without a clear explanation of what would actually be done. At the same time, I was immediately encouraged to purchase another camera from the shop instead of repairing mine, which made the interaction feel more sales driven than diagnostic. Given the simplicity of the issue I later confirmed myself, the evaluation did not feel careful or transparent. I would have expected a more thorough assessment and a clearer technical explanation before being asked to make that kind of decision. This was my first experience after arriving in the city and looking for a reliable camera technician, so it was especially disappointing. Based on this experience, I will not be returning.

Summary: brought my camera in to fix minor issue couldn’t afford the quote, paid $30 for him to look at it, and got camera back worse off than before. now it is unuseable. 0/10 terrible experience. What happened: Brought in my Canon AE-1 to fix an issue with the shutter, and the old man was rude to me and grumpy from the start. Then I asked for a quote to fix the shutter issue and the price was $150, which is higher than the price of the camera itself. I told him I couldn’t afford it, so I paid $30 for his troubles to look at the camera. When I came to pick it up, all of the components associated with the battery were not working. This is a new problem that wasn’t there before. I asked him about it, and he insisted that it was that way when I brought it in. I know this camera and it was not. So now I paid $30 for him to make my camera worse off than before. Now it is unusable. I am beginning to suspect that he was upset that I couldn’t afford the quote and purposely made my camera worse. That, or he accidentally broke something when looking at it and wants to blame it on me to avoid fixing it when I can’t afford the quote. I will be finding a different camera repair shop. Would never trust this person with my business. Bad experience from start to finish, would put negative stars if that was an option.
