Possibly the best udon I’ve had in the UK so far. The staff are warm and friendly, and it’s one of my must-visit restaurants every time I come to Cardiff.

Incredible and authentic handmade udon dishes - a favourite spot I return to whenever I'm back in Cardiff. I usually go for the Kake Udon as the fish broth is gorgeous but would recommend the curry udon too ✨️

Does Hatsu Udon deserve its near-legendary status in the Cardiff noodle scene? I had to visit for myself to find out. Located not too far from the city centre, the restaurant is open-plan, so you can see the chefs cooking your food. First up was the side of Chicken Karaage. They were very tasty and not overcooked. Just the right balance of outside crispness and tender chicken. For the noodles I had Kake Beef Udon with Onsen Egg, plus a prawn tempura and a crab-stick tempura. The noodles were amazing with a fresh al dente consistency. The broth had a sweet and savoury balance which lifted the whole dish. The tempura were also excellent. They were served piping hot with the batter cooked to just the right colour and texture. You could really taste the fresh seafood. The service was ok. It’s very much a “take your order, here’s your food, here’s the bill” kind of place. That said, the staff are friendly. I did have to wait a long time for our mains to be cleared away and ended up standing up to ask for the bill. Overall the service didn’t dent the experience – the quality of the food more than made up for it. I definitely want to come back and sample more of their delicious noodles.

Nice Japanese noodle bar near Cardiff bay. Selection of hot and cold soup noodles, fried noodles, tempura and rice bowls. Kids meal deal too. Tasty and reasonably priced. Everything was cooked nicely and tasted good, if a little too much mayo for my liking. Service was great, friendly and inviting. Bar seats and tables available. On a busy through road with limited street parking so plan ahead. Enjoyed our visit and will try again.

Absolutely wonderful Udon restaurant that is a great addition to Cardiff’s culinary repertoire. Lovely, friendly staff, clean premises and the food is extremely authentic and sublime. They do vegan, vegetarian and halal options too. Just an excellent evening’s food and my son absolutely chowed down on his well balanced kids meal.
