We were in Niagara on the Lake / Bench region for the weekend and this was by far our favorite stop. If you enjoy learning about wines and doing a REAL tasting with a knowledgeable team vs a tourist trap this is the spot.
Splurged and did the full guided tasting. Well worth the time and price. The host was excellent and the range of wines showed off the winery's strengths. The current Gamay and Sauvignon Blanc are great wines.
Good wine but overpriced in comparison to other similar wineries in the region. The owner however is extremely rude and entitled. We arrived for my father's 70th to enjoy some wine only to be met with rudeness even though there was plenty of space to accommodate our group of 12 adults on their patio. He was very upset that we had "so many people". I had called days in advance to ensure they were prepared for us and was advise we would be taken care of. Instead the owner decided to berrate me for some unknown reason. Will never go back.
We stopped by Hidden Bench on a Friday afternoon without a reservation and decided to try our luck. The owner greeted us right away and was warm, welcoming, and clearly passionate about what they do. He managed to fit us in for a tasting and we were served by Laura who was incredibly knowledgeable and made the whole experience fun and relaxed. The wines were excellent. We ended up buying six bottles to take home, which we would have done anyway, but it was a nice bonus that the tasting fee was waived with the purchase. The setting added to the experience, the tasting took place in a beautiful heritage house overlooking the vineyards. Highly recommend visiting if you’re in the area. Great people, great wine, great atmosphere.
We’ve been huge fans of this winery for many years. Always a wonderful experience tasting with Matt & Harald at Hidden Bench … with my hubby (Mark K) … if it’s possible almost too much knowledge between the three of these guys with a lot to taste. Haha. Still my favourite winery on The Bench. Certified organic, eco, sustainable. Their style of wine making is outstanding. This is Ontario at it’s best. PS … Hidden Bench’s Wine Club is awesome with many perks.
