I’m sharing my experience to help other families make an informed decision. Based on our experience with Robert, I was disappointed with the quality of tutoring. Teaching quality:** My daughter’s math understanding did not improve, and in fact, several of the solutions he assisted with were incorrect. An important concern was that the tutor seemed to lack a solid grasp of basic math concepts. Verification with school:** I received a call from my daughter’s teacher confirming that the answers provided during sessions were not correct, which was worrying. Value for money:** Given the incorrect guidance and limited progress, I question whether the service delivered good value for the price. Recommendation:** I don’t highly recommend Robert at this time. There are other tutors and providers who demonstrate stronger knowledge, reliability, and a track record of better outcomes. If you’re considering tutoring services, I suggest: Checking qualifications and requesting a short diagnostic assessment or trial session. Asking for references from other families. Requesting a sample session focused on your child’s specific topics. Verifying progress with periodic updates and teacher/parent communication.
Our oldest wanted to increase her SAT math score. With Robert's assistance (and very helpful scheduling flexibility), she got an extra 60 points in a fairly short period of tutoring time. Highly recommend.
In 2019, our son went to Robert for 2 sessions, specifically for calculus review/prep for the final exam. He went to his office for 2 hours a session, and did well on the exam. In 2025, our daughter started tutoring sessions with Robert. This time we decided to invest in 30 sessions because she was really struggling with algebra and was at risk for needing to repeat the class. At first I was hesitant with the on-line approach, but after seeing how well the platform and process worked, I was confident that all 30 sessions could be done this way successfully. Robert's straight forward and direct approach fit our daughter's learning style. She started believing in herself a little more each week as her confidence grew and homework, quiz, and test scores went up. While it was great to see consistent A's in everything she turned in, the change in self-worth and personal pride was priceless! Thank you, Robert!
Mr. Brett is an excellent resource for all things math. He helped my daughter through some rough math times. For all his dedication, I'm so grateful. He always showed up - even when he was ill. He puts that high standard onto students, so expect to show up and be engaged to get the most of what he offers. He's also very caring and wants the best for his students. My daughter struggled with pre-calculus in high school, so we decided to go with Mr. Brettʻs tutoring service in order to best prepare her for college calculus. This has been our first experience with a tutor and Mr. Brett has been able to relate the concepts well and she has gained a better understanding and can work through the problems in a systematic way. He is patient and provides clarity when she needed more explanation. My daughter has gained more confidence in solving calculus problems and is better prepared for college calculus. We would definitely recommend Honolulu Math Tutor.
