The locker room smells like a sewer and it never gets fixed, the membership is massively over priced for the bouldering walls provided and there’s a huge monthly cost of $9/month price even just to “pause” a membership. When asked what exactly the $9 is going towards, the excuse is: ‘no reason: it’s common practice at climbing gyms.’
I have been climbing here for around 3 years, up until around maybe 4 or 5 months ago I would of rated joes 5 stars. Lately the bouldering route setting has been very frustrating. The routes are now all set much harder then they were before, leaving average level and new climbers barely anything to climb. They are not set with short people in mind and all set geared to tall and dynamic climbing. I feel very frustrated paying for my monthly membership and not being able to climb as many routes as I once could. I have barely been coming because not only are they hard but most of them aren't fun either.. I am seriously considering a new gym. If joes wasn't a 10 minute walk from my apartment I would of left already. If you are a new climber or climb the blue level at Joe's I would recommend finding somewhere else... or else you'll be stuck with very little bouldering. Only silver lining is the top rope routes are still fun.
Route setting used to be great. I came back to climb here after living abroad and was pretty disappointed. Hopefully it will change, but in general being forced into awkward positions isn’t very fun, maybe they are just trying to be different but it feels like inexperience. Was my favourite gym in Toronto, not so much anymore. Really hope they figure out their route setting problems. Other than that the gym is seriously lacking and they also don’t have any system board which I really think is a necessity especially given the price they charge for a day pass.
This is a really good bouldering gym. The setting here is the best I‘ve experienced in Toronto and the staff is really nice. It doesn’t look like a big gym at first, but they make the most of a smaller space and have tons of boulder problems for all difficulties. The comp wall was fun as well, again offering comp-style problems for all strengths. Also love the logo stickers! Did not try the roped climbing.
So much variety! Plenty of things you can try and awesome staff. Loved the circuit set especially. Note: pay for parking! The parking lot across from Joe's isn't free. You'll get a $60 ticket. Ask me how I know.
