Oof, it's been hard to know what's going on with our kids at school. Updates are minimal. Photos are minimal. There's no syllabus or weekly updates on what they're learning in class. I always have to ask the teacher for the schedule. Had no idea they had PE, where they are handed off to a coach and their main teacher is not present. Asked once to get an insight on what they're learning weekly in Social Emotional class; after a few back and forth of requests, finally got a month's worth of what topic our kids are learning about. Homework is often given w/no context. When asked, not very useful advice on how to help our student read, esp since we do not even know what letter/sound they're even being taught in school that week. People are just told to read along w/their children and they'll learn how to read that way, and that's simply not going to work. You have to teach them phonetics! and this year, for some reason, no Room Parent so no idea what the heck is going on (had no idea when they do testings, no idea that their headphones weren't really working well, had no idea they receive awards quarterly) and no help from the school or their Parent Association to create community or connect w/other parents. The PTA is mostly concerned w/fundraising and less welcoming fresh new incoming parents, for whom this is their first time sending their child here. I def expected a warmer welcome from those people on JMAP, esp since 2 of them have kids in my student's class. Pick up is stale and dry. Everybody stands by themselves looking forward and not many interact, so it's been hard to connect with them. New principal is great this year so hopefully, she stays for a long time, and things will look a lot better in the future but so far 23/24 school year deserves just 3 stars from me.
Hey so, I'm not sure if John Muir ever read their reviews, but hey I'm Eli, and I used to be a student here. It is a blast to be here and you know, it was actually fun to go here. I didn't even realize it until that one foggy day at the field. So I was accepted at a school called Preuss (You should/Shouldn't check it out). But I shouldn't bring Preuss into this, what I was trying to say was this school (with good friends, if they knew who I was referring to), can make your school life easier. *sighs* And I really missed being here, if only..... So this school is good because through kinder-5th grade, you get teached Spanish class. So that is my REVIEW. 🙂🙃🫠😔
Amazing teachers!! We absolutely love being apart of the John Muir community. My two kids 8yrs & 6yrs have excelled in learning Spanish. The Spanish immersion curriculum is excellent and is the same curriculum used at Longfellow! The school construction will be done next year. The new building is beautiful and the kids love learning in the new classrooms. The school is still in the process of phasing in the Spanish immersion program and continues to add a new grade each year. It’s a wonderful community of parents, students, staff and teachers. I would highly recommend applying to this Spanish Immersion program through the school choice application on the San Diego Unified website! It is free, all you have to do is apply!
