I’ll be honest—my first impression years ago was some version of: Is a store that sells boutique things like this actually going to make it in Wichita? It felt ambitious. Possibly optimistic. Maybe even a little naïve. Time has corrected that assumption. What I’ve come to realize is that Love of Character isn’t in the business of selling boutique goods so much as it is in the business of solving problems—consistently, thoughtfully, and with an uncommon level of excellence. That distinction matters. Many high-end retailers in town operate on a familiar script: someone retrieves items from the shelf, puts them on you, steps back, and lets you make the final call. It’s transactional efficiency dressed up as service. You leave with a purchase, but rarely with clarity. Love of Character works differently. You can walk in with an actual problem—something undefined, contextual, or inconvenient—and trust that it will be taken seriously. Yes, they’ll happily pull what you want off the shelf. But that’s not their superpower. Their superpower is discernment: listening well, asking the right questions, and offering solutions that fit the person, not just the product. In a culture that has largely forgotten that commerce can be an act of stewardship, Love of Character operates on a more enduring frequency. There’s something almost timeless about the way they conduct business—where excellence and good attitude are not tactics, but habits. I was wrong at first. And I’m glad I was.
Finally went in! OMG so cute so fun. Gift store, stationary, mahjong sets and they have open play mahjong club (membership is on my Christmas list!) Im disappointed in myself for having missed this charming spot! I picked up some cute cocktail napkins but know I'll be back in a few weeks for some perfect something. If it's trending they probably have it.
Get away from this place ASAP! Yesterday I went to the store and ordered two helium balloons to have writing on them, a large one for about $25 and a medium one for about $7. The girl told me that yes, I could write on both balloons—the large and the medium. The next day I went to pick up the balloons and was BIG SURPRISE: They made the two LARGE balloons for $25 each without my permission. They didn't call me to ask for my permission to change the balloon size. The wording on one of the large balloons was incomplete, and the writing quality was terrible. She said the writing wouldn't fit on the balloon (even though it was large and had plenty of space). But why didn't they tell me before I placed the order? They acted in bad faith! I explained the errors in the order, and she said both were large because I didn't write in the medium-sized balloon (even though the other girl told me I wrote in the medium-sized balloon too)... On top of all that, the writing was of very poor quality. I suggest that if you want a personalized balloon, order it online and have it inflated at Dollar Tree. 🤷🏻♀️ The lady who was there, probably the owner, was very ignorant and rude... She paid little attention to me the whole time, she was very arrogant, I was treated very badly. It was obvious that she didn't want to serve me, making ugly faces, turning away, and not paying attention when I tried to explain what happened... She simply explained it away, and that was it. Sometimes this store must be anti-immigrant, and I didn't know it. Because I'm an immigrant, and I've never been so poorly treated since I arrived in the US three years ago. I felt embarrassed and unsure of what to do. They understood my request perfectly, even when I called later to confirm everything. In the end, two balloons, a wrong order, terrible quality, and $65 overpaid Balloons that I won't use, and the store made no effort to understand or resolve the issue. Thankfully, it was a small order; in the end, I'm extremely unhappy and frustrated with this place.
The Love of Character in College Hill is our absolute favorite place to host a party! We have so many incredible memories in this store and Mary and her team do a fantastic job at creating an unforgettable experience with top notch customer service.
Great local small business! They are a pleasure to work with. They are kind, responsive, and organized. They created two balloon towers for our Easter event. The towers were a great eye catching piece that the kids and families loved. I highly recommend them for your next event.
