This building doesn't get a lot of promotion in web searches of things to do in Canberra but I recommend a visit before you embark on your tour. It sets everything in context from the idea of a federal government to the creation of a new city to house it. The architectural master plan is well documented and displayed and you have to applaud the foresight of the politicians who voted for the Griffin design which has produced the impressive city of today. Learn everything from how the city got its name to where the bricks were made to build it. As a bonus, the exhibition building occupies a stunning site overlooking the lake and the cityscape designed by the Griffins.
The National Capital Exhibition is a very informative and interactive display of the history, planning and construction of Canberra. This is a free exhibition and is great for all ages.
Its definitely a must visit if you are a tourist. The entry is free. The Exhibition centre walks you through the history of Canberra. It offers an immersive experience as well. They have a small theatre which runs shows about Canberra and how it was formed. It also consists of a timeline about the formation of Canberra. Visited the National Capital Exhibition and really enjoyed the experience. The exhibition gives a clear and engaging overview of how Canberra was designed and developed — from its original concept as Australia’s capital to the modern city it is today. The displays are well presented, with interactive models, maps, and videos that make learning about the city’s history and architecture genuinely interesting. The staff were friendly and informative, happy to answer questions and share stories about Canberra’s past. The location by Lake Burley Griffin is beautiful, and you can enjoy a nice walk along the water after visiting. It’s a small but meaningful exhibition that helps you understand the vision behind Canberra’s unique layout and design. Highly recommended for anyone interested in history, architecture, or Australian culture.
