Really lovely staff and a wonderful selection. The ambiance is my favorite part, with plenty of cozy spots to sit and linger. I enjoy taking my time choosing my next read, and this is the perfect place to do that. I also loved the small bookmark/card included with my purchase, it was genuinely charming to see all the languages represented, including mine, as part of such a thoughtful backstory to the bookstore’s name ❤️
This is a bookstore so I understand that they need to have certain restrictions around carrying food and drinks inside and I’m happy to respect that. But the staff is incredibly rude. My toddler was sitting on a sofa chair and the staff presumed they could walk up to them and talk to them about how to behave without speaking with the parents first. I then took my toddler away from the sofa and she was walking next to me. She loves books and barely touched a book to flip it open and look at the pictures when another staff member came and snatched the book out of her hands, again without speaking with me first. Totally inappropriate. The books are great but I walked out as they do not deserve my money for this behavior.
This bookstore have many special books, especially picture books collection is worth the visit. But here is problem: the mall security and this bookstore… they don’t match at all. Like wearing suit jacket with beach shorts. Security guard walk around very serious face, checking everybody like we are criminal, but we just want look at art book quietly. The bookstore try very hard be peaceful creative space, but mall management send these security people make everyone nervous. Is like they don’t understand what kind of place this is. Inside bookstore very nice, staff understand books, selection is interesting. But outside atmosphere kill the mood little bit. I spend one hour there looking picture books, very good quality, some I never see before. But every time I relax, security guard walk past and I feel like I doing something wrong just by standing there. If bookstore can move to different location without this security situation, would be perfect. But I guess they have no choice, mall is mall. Still recommend go if you like special books. Just ignore the serious guards, they probably don’t read books anyway. Worth visit for the books, just prepare for the weird contrast.
Encountered unexpectedly great selections of art and humanity books! They have a short and beautiful essay of Jhumpa Lahiri, a full collection of John Berger’s, and also a few of Pocket Perspectives from Thames & Hudson. Wish this place keeps the bar high and thrives.🫰🖖
I made a special trip to Granville Island on July 6, during a short visit to Vancouver, specifically to check out Nooroongji Books after seeing so many positive reviews online. Unfortunately, my experience was disappointing. I arrived about 15 minutes before closing (likely poor timing on my part) but was met with an unwelcoming atmosphere. Staff and a security guard were quick to usher us out, which made the visit feel rushed and uncomfortable. The selection also felt quite limited and didn’t live up to the hype. While I understand closing time pressures, the overall experience left a bad impression. I’m not sure I’d feel differently even if I had arrived earlier. Sadly, I don’t plan to return.
