Yummy and traditional dim sum restaurant. Peking duck, beef tripe stew and rabbit jello dessert are my favorite here. The service could be hit or miss depends on how busy they are.
I am a loyal customer of Peony Seafood, and I have been dining here for five consecutive years. In the past, there were occasional issues. For example, the manager Iris claimed steamed fish that was clearly dead for long as “live”. Nothing else was abnormal until tonight. While several nearby tables with elderly customers were served complimentary bowls of soup, none were provided to me. When I asked Iris about the discrepancy, she said everyone was so busy that soup was not guaranteed. When I asked her again after she was less busy, she did not know whether there was any soup left, and instructed me to ask the owner, a Cantonese man in his 60’s who was seated in an inner area of the restaurant. I approached the owner and asked him the same question. He responded, “I don’t know how dishes are served here. Go ask the managers outside.” As I stepped away to look for another manager, the owner followed me and pushed me with both hands. After I finally found one and began speaking with that manager, the owner stood near the cashier, pointed at me with an angry face, and yelled *x4 the young people in Cantonese. The owner’s physical contact, verbal abuse, and discriminatory treatment were entirely unacceptable. What a way to spend New Year’s Day. They are gonna lose more loyal customers for sure.
Peony is our go-to spot when we want a real Cantonese food and dim sum. Their dim sum is consistently fresh and flavorful—especially the beef balls, steamed spare ribs, and rice rolls—and all are hand-made. The lobster & noodle combo is a must-order: generous portion, fresh lobster, perfectly cooked noodles, and great for sharing at a big table. We also love the congee and veggie dishes, which balance out the meal and taste just like home-style cooking. Service is efficient, the dining room is perfect for family gatherings and celebrations, and prices are very fair for the quality and portion size. Highly recommend Peony for anyone looking for authentic Cantonese dim sum and banquet-style dishes in the East Bay.
I visited Peony Seafood Restaurant with my family. The space is large and can accommodate big groups, but the service follows the traditional Chinese-style approach—minimal and not particularly attentive. While the desserts were cute and tasty, most of the dim sum dishes were disappointing. It seems like they make everything to order, which results in slower service. Prices are on the higher side, and overall, it didn’t meet expectations. I wouldn’t recommend it for dim sum enthusiasts.
I came for the dim sum lunch with a friend who had never had dim sum before. This place is very authentic and we both thought everything was delicious. My favorite items were the crispy shrimp balls, steamed pork buns, short ribs, and the steamed egg custard buns.
