We LOVE Pratt - we’ve tried blacksmithing and glassblowing so far, and have more classes booked. Rand was a fantastic glassblowing teacher, providing very clear, calm directions, which was so appreciated when you’re working with hot glass for the first time! He is a truly skilled craftsman and educator. Pratt team, you should advertise at the local community centers! I’m sure any of the cc users would love to hear about another accessible place to learn and craft. Thanks for all you do
The instructors they hire for classes are great! But nothing else is. The ventilation in all the facilities that produce heavy metal fumes is questionable at best, which is still better than that of the bathrooms which smell like piss and cigarettes (likely due to the cigarettes people keep throwing in the sink). I signed up for a studio access appointment for the wood shop and booked two weeks in advance out of courtesy; they canceled one week before the booking and ghosted me without returning my fee. This is theft. I don't believe stealing from a POC reflects very well on their so-called "commitment to racial equity". I really liked the idea of this place, but after experiencing it for myself I cannot recommend it to anyone.
I highly recommend to anyone to try new classes and enjoy access to the many art studios at Fine Arts Center. It’s a wonderful campus and organization. All the instructors I had were very knowledgeable and supportive. All staff members made me feel very welcomed.
Big studios, good equipment and facilities. Instructors are super knowledgeable and friendly. They were explaining the process in detail which made me a bit more confident when working with hot flames. I had a blast in the glass studios. There is plenty of free parking around the building.
From blacksmithing to carpentry, and stone-carving to jewelry-making, glass-blowing, etc. The Pratt is a fascinating place where you can see all sorts of artworks coming to life. It is also mostly funded by well deserved donations from people who support the arts. My gf and I took a fantastic 4hr beginner blacksmithing class: the teacher was experienced and passionate about the subject, and the rest of the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had decent hands-on-time in a well supplied forge, making a couple of garden ornaments with a handful of friendly people. I highly recommend looking into this institution if you are interested in learning blacksmithing (and from what we saw stone-carving, glass-blowing and carpentry as well).
