At 60, my wife and I dove into the world of martial arts for the first time. We began exploring Tai Chi and Kung Fu at the West LA School of Martial Arts, and we cannot recommend it enough. From the moment we arrived, Sifu Scott, the instructors, and the senior students greeted us with warmth and encouragement, instantly making us feel at home. Each class is a highlight of our week. No matter your age, background, or physical ability, treat yourself to a trial class. We think you will be hooked and want to join us on this journey.
If you're looking for a welcoming and family-friendly place to learn martial arts, this is it. Sifu Scott is a fantastic instructor, who is not only incredibly skilled, but also very caring and encouraging. I have been taking the adult Kung Fu classes for nearly 3 years. Every class is a fantastic workout, and great way to learn self defense in a protected and safe environment. The staff and community feel like my family, which keeps me a regular there. I recently enrolled my son in the Wushu class and he loves learning the moves. He has become more responsible and disciplined by watching and partnering the older kids in his class.
My daughters have been attending the School of Martial Arts in West LA for nearly four years now. One of the most memorable and rewarding experiences was during COVID, when classes were held outdoors at Clover Park. It was there that they began learning Wushu Kung Fu under the direct instruction of Sifu Scott. Sifu Scott is a highly experienced black belt instructor. He brings a calm, focused presence to every class, balancing discipline with patience and encouragement. He doesn’t just teach Kung Fu—he instills important life skills such as discipline, confidence, and perseverance. The training is thoughtfully designed: it's challenging enough to promote growth, yet never so intense that it discourages the kids from attending. My daughters always look forward to their classes. The entire staff is exceptional, especially Ms. Macey, who has been with us since the beginning. She’s incredibly supportive and consistently goes above and beyond for the students and families.
It was my first time School Of Martial Arts to practice yoga. All my interactions were super positive and friendly and kind people working there, plus a lovely large bright room for yoga! I highly recommend.
A notable location in West Los Angeles (WLA) is led by Sifu Ryan Scott, a martial artist and spiritual instructor who delivers his teachings with dedication. His demonstrations of T’ai Chi movements resemble the graceful motions of birds, particularly in forms like "White Stork Cools Wings,” Sifu exemplifies these animal-inspired postures through his practice. His staff members, Katherine, Davia, and Sam are also competent instructors. The studio, known as the dojo, features a Zen-inspired décor with water fountains and spiritual books, creating an atmosphere of tranquility. I began practicing T’ai Chi for physical therapy following a knee injury in January 2024, which contributed to my recovery and ability to walk again within months. Additionally, Sifu Scott offers self-defense training in other martial arts such as Kung Fu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The dojo serves not only as a place for practicing techniques but also as a space for personal growth and mindfulness, fostering a supportive community among students and instructors.
