We’ve been working with Studio Murnane to redesign and rebuild our home in Altadena, after it was lost to the Eaton Canyon Fire. The Murnane team has been compassionate, creative, and communicative. Throughout our collaboration, they’ve taken our feedback and found creative solutions, quickly iterating new layouts and interior designs. They have longstanding relationships with vendors and general contractors, and are guiding us in the construction process. As we await our permit approvals from the county, we’re confident that we made the right choice working with Murnane to (re)build our dream house. After weeks of dealing with insurance, finding temporary housing, and starting anew, the decision fatigue was real and selecting an architect was daunting. But as soon as we had our first meeting with McShane Murnane, we knew we had made the right choice. We were, of course, impressed with the studio’s portfolio and had long admired many of the spaces they have created and/or transformed. But what really sold us was McShane’s presence, his calm and confident optimism. “We’ll take care of you”, he told us during our first meeting. For a family with two young children navigating trauma and grief, establishing this sense of trust was crucial. Mcshane, his wife Cleo, and the team also understood that for our young family, and after an unprecedented disaster, time is of the essence. We want to be back home when our kids are still little, so they can enjoy their childhood in our chosen home. We have been meeting weekly, brainstorming and planning under an accelerated timeline while they listen to our vision, and design our dream home. Cleo has been working diligently to source materials and products that are high quality yet cost efficient, and has so many creative ideas for how we can honor the history of our home. Without childcare for our infant son, they have welcomed him into their space and he has attended every meeting; this has truly been a family endeavor. We submitted our plans to the county only five weeks after our first meeting. We cried when we saw the first rendering of our future home. We questioned whether we deserved to have something so nice. Cleo reassured us that we do.
