Great coaches who help you scale the workout to your needs, and a very approachable group of normal folks there to workout, not to show off or to be seen.
I've been going to Sweat Rockridge for 3 years. Great location, instructors, program, participants, and vibe. It's helped my fitness tremendously. The focus is on the workout, not on flash. This is not Equinox. We go through different movements/exercises, each around 60 seconds, with about 10 seconds to switch between exercise stations. Stations are mostly free weights, with a few machines: bikes, skiers, rowers. Weekdays have arm days, leg days, and core days, while weekends generally are whole-body, i.e., a bit of arms, legs, and core. Because we're pushing card, cardio always factors in; I find my heart rate is aroudn 130 to 150 bpm across a workout. We have a broad range of exercises to workout a range of muscle groups. Workouts are flexible. You can push yourself hard, or throttle back, as needed. For example, if you're tapering before a competition, or recovering from a competition or injury. When recovering from surgery, or from an injury, I've found instructors to be accommodating if I need to modify a movement or replace it entirely. Being of a certain age, I reduce jumping for some movements to save my joints. Some people make the workouts social, chatting the whole time. I'm more quiet, focusing on my workout, thinking form, and finding and thriving in the "pain cave" where I can. It's flexible that way. But one thing we're not doing is preening. Instructors are generally very helpful and knowledgable in terms of coaching us to have the right form. Before each workout, they'll show the correct way to do each station. Sometimes I'll make eye contact and ask if I'm doing a movement correctly, for example, for RDLs since I injured my back long ago. Anyways, Sweat is highly recommended!
Just came for my first class - a leg focused workout. I was nervous because my legs are super sore today, but thankfully the class focused on lower body muscles while also being a full body workout. As someone who’s getting back into shape, I loved that I was able to modify the difficulty to my comfort level. Teacher was awesome and super supportive, great playlist, great workout, overall great experience! Will definitely come back!
If you’re looking for a gym with a high vibe feel and community, this is it! I went for a drop in to the Emeryville location with my friend Nechelle and from start to finish my heart was so full. Josh is an excellent trainer who went over our movements in detail before we started. He brought great energy and kept the large class flowing without hiccups. The music was perfect, the workout kicked my butt (in the best way possible😜)and I had a blast. Looking forward to my next sweat experience💫
In a blink, it has been 5 years since I joined Sweat. Day by day, it has become part of my life and a healthy, centering and motivating way to start each day. Pluses: our supportive community, our encouraging coaches, our creative and challenging routines - all of which add up to the joy of a natural high. Indoor or outdoors, Sweat is the best hour you can gift yourself!
