Tam O'Shanter isn't just legendary for being one of Walt Disney's old haunts (they even have a plaque at his favorite booth). It's legendary for it's immersive atmosphere, which needs little imagination to understand Walt's fascination with the place. It takes its name from Robert Burns's 18th century poem telling the story of drunken farmer riding home from the pub. Tam stumbles upon a church of witches, warlocks, and the Devil playing bagpipes. They give chase until Tam crosses the River Doon, impassable for evil creatures, and escapes with his life. The restaurant really leans into this Scottish tale with an old cottage feel with exposed beams, low lighting, and stained/bottle glass windows. There are paintings and portraits of British folk, framed tartan (plaid) pair with its clan name, long stemmed pipes and tankards, flags, crests, and all sorts of paraphernalia. There is even a painting of Tam O'Shanter himself. The bar area has its own scaled down menu and has open seating. The restaurant proper requires reservations. The serves are fast and friendly across the board. The food is pricey but worth it (you'll likely need a to-go box). The drinks are tasty as well, but not too boozy. Over all, if you love British history & literature, good food, and drinks, Tam O'Shanter will charm your socks off.
We had the prime rib dinner, it was excellent! The bread roll was a little uncooked inside, but it was edible, that's a tic I have with undercooked breads. The prime rib, medium rare, was done just right, I might get it more medium next time. It wasn't full of fat but had enough to add great flavors. The drinks were not watered down, and of a generous size. The history on the walls, and ceiling, everywhere, was very interesting to read and study. The lighting was just right, not dark but not bright and overwhelming, very soft. All the staff are friendly and very courteous. $9.50 for valet parking. I enjoyed being able to have conversations with the other friends at my table and not being overwhelmed by blaring music that some restaurants play. They do not rush you in and rush you out, they allow you to spend your time there and enjoy the atmosphere. Kids friendly and they also enjoyed it. Definitely a place to put in your must go book.
We came in December and got prime rib, cocktails, and dessert. Classic fine dining. Prime rib was excellent, bread pudding was warm and saucey, and all the drinks were superb. We even had carolers come to our table! Lovely evening all around. Pricey, but a Hollywood classic spot.
What an amazing experience! We requested table 35 where we were told Walt and Lillian, Disney used to have their private dinners. They started with sourdough bread; very crispy crust super soft inside. My husband ordered the prime rib and loved it! I ordered the roast chicken. It was also fabulous, and it came rather quickly. Service was good and the atmosphere in the restaurant was just super cool. If you go check out the photos and memorabilia in the lobby before you are seated.
Amazing place! I've lived here all my life and never came here until today. I brought my 76 year old dad here for his birthday and unfortunately we didn't have reservations. Donna went out of her way to somehow squeeze us in and it was one of the best birthday dinners ever! We've gone to the Smokehouse forever and this place was not only better atmosphere-wise but the food and service is far superior. We will most definitely be coming back! Highly recommend.
