First of all - this place is always crowded. I guess where it is situated has an impact on the number of visitors. So I highly recommend getting tickets in advance. However, despite the crowds, you are able to stop and admire even the most popular art pieces in the Institute, thanks to the fact they are not kept close to each other. Fairly big collection of French painters and two of the most important US paintings are here. What I also really liked is how the ancient Greece and Rome sculptures are presented - you can basically stick your nose into them to check out the details. And the staff in the gift shop was really friendly!

During our visit, we saw iconic works by Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Edvard Munch, standing in front of paintings you’ve seen in books all your life and finally experiencing them in person. The museum is home to legendary masterpieces such as Water Lilies, The Bedroom, The Old Guitarist, American Gothic, and Nighthawks — and seeing them in real life is truly unforgettable. One entire gallery was dedicated to medieval armor and weapons, with beautifully preserved suits of armor, swords, and ceremonial pieces. Walking through that hall felt like stepping into another century — powerful, dramatic, and incredibly atmospheric. We also spent time in the Japanese art galleries, including a special exhibition by a Japanese artist whose work reminded me of stylized runes — graphic, symbolic, minimal, and deeply contemplative. The contrast between European modernism and Japanese visual language was striking and beautifully curated. What makes this museum exceptional is its range and balance: from Impressionism and Modern Art to Asian collections and medieval history, everything flows naturally without feeling overwhelming. The building itself is elegant and spacious, inviting you to slow down and truly engage with what you’re seeing. The Art Institute of Chicago is not just a museum — it’s a journey through civilizations, ideas, and inner worlds. You leave inspired, grounded, and intellectually enriched. The art museum in Chicago impressed me with tons of masterpieces. I thought I would not spend much time here since I was not a fan of art. However, I really enjoyed seeing and walking around inside. Many paintings were collected in my textbooks. I could not describe my feelings when standing in front of these paintings where I could see each painting dots of color. Everything was attractive in beautiful rooms. It was convenient to buy tickets using the city pass. Food was prohibited. The gift shop was wonderful. I really loved the lovely themed pokers and magnets.
The Art Institute of Chicago is a national treasure, and a must-see for visitors to our great city. AIC holds some of the world's finest examples of paintings, sculptures and architecture, and so much so that it's too much to list in a review. You could honestly take two full days to go through the museum and not see all of it. I especially enjoy the Hudson River School paintings, along with the impressionists' artworks. The Stock Exchange room rebuild is impressive for not only it's beauty but also a nod to Chicago's important place in commercial trade. The modern art wing holds major pieces from Warhol, Pollock, and others, and definitely worth a look. The gift shop has fantastic offerings, worthy of the caliber of art it displays. Membership offers 1 hour early access 10am-11am, and it's definitely worth the extra cost to take advantage of that early access to see major works without distraction. Audio description and interpretations for select art is available through the AIC app, and I recommend utilizing this free service when available. Discounted/free museum access is available on select days and for certain categories of patrons (e.g. active service military, Illinois residents, etc) so check their website for details as these offers do change. Certainly, AIC is one of the best museums in the country. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy it if you can do so.
I recently visited The Art Institute of Chicago and was thoroughly impressed by the depth and quality of its collections. The museum offers an exceptional experience from the moment you enter, with a well-organized layout and beautifully curated galleries. The Impressionist collection is truly outstanding, featuring iconic works presented in a way that allows you to appreciate both their artistic detail and historical context. The galleries of European paintings and sculptures are equally remarkable, showcasing a wide range of masterpieces. I also enjoyed the American art halls, which provide a comprehensive view of the country’s artistic heritage. The arms and armor exhibit is another highlight, offering an intriguing look at craftsmanship and design across different eras. Of course, the museum’s signature installations are unforgettable: the Chagall windows, the stunning Tiffany window, and the Asian Art galleries, each offering a unique and memorable experience. Overall, The Art Institute of Chicago is a world-class museum with remarkable breadth and depth. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city.
