We had a great dine out experience at Carlino. The food and service were excellent and exceeded our expectations. Each member of the staff was excellent, including Sarah who was very attentive and prompt with the service, Gurpreet the manager who always made sure everyone was taken care of and the wine sommelier (forgot to get his name) who was very knowledgeable about each wine he served. Food was delicious with generous quantity, stating with the pre-appetizer, appetizer, palette cleanser, the main dish and desserts. The only (constructive) critique we have is the Seared Pacific Rockfish “alla Triestina” we ordered was slightly on the salty side, maybe tone down the salt a bit for that particular dish which would’ve been excellent otherwise. The Ragú d’Anatra and the Wild mushroom- Barley Risotto appetizer dishes and the Braised Beef Short Ribs “alla Friulana” were excellent! We also had the “Zovo flight” wine selection covering various Italian regions which was great especially since we live in the neighbourhood and didn’t have to drive. Carlino is our new favourite neighbourhood restaurant.
3rd visit to Carlino (this year for Dine Out 2026), and it did not disappoint! The amount of courses and food for just $65/pp was really lovely. Our bellies were filled to the brim (we finished everything, but could have definitely brought home leftovers!) Both choices for most of the courses were good (highly recommend going with someone else so you can try them all!), but the true "orange" on top was the classic Kitchen Table olive oil cake 🫒🍰. A chef's kiss ending! (palate cleanser was also very memorable!)
We tried the seasonal dish of wild mushroom pasta and the fish, and we enjoyed every bite—so much so that it left us wanting more! Our server, Sarah, was extremely kind and fun to chat with, which added to our delightful experience. We're already planning to return for my birthday dinner. If I had to suggest one improvement, it would be to have slightly larger portions. Overall, it was a fantastic meal!
I am really mixed in how to rate the food. Appies were very good, especially the scallops. However the meal itself was very disappointing. The Cornish Hen, which I suspect was really chicken since it was quite a bit larger, was almost raw in the middle. Trout was overcooked. All the dishes that were served to us didn't come with much food. My pics show this and before you start wondering what I'm talking about, be aware that these dishes were for 5 people to share. A couple of us left hungry. Service was extremely poor. When they brought the food they neglected to provide serving spoons or tongs; we had to ask for some. Also, they kept trying to clean up our drink glasses before the drinks were even finished. I guess it's a way to boost bar sales. Dessert was good. As for atmosphere, the place was pleasant enough, nicely decorated.
I liked that the restaurant is located on the 3rd floor and the ambiance is nice and cozy. The staff service is friendly and the Burrata Ripiena al Pesto is very fresh and delicious. The shrimp (Gamberi Blu del Pacifico Saltati) was nicely done. The bone marrow (Midollo Osseo Arrostito) was too oily and lacking in taste. I love a fresh pasta and the Cjarsons della Casa was nice but the stuffing is too sweet. The chef should swap it for a savoury filling instead. They did not have the lobster available the night we came in, so I will order that for next time. The dessert menu is limited and uninteresting so we went for dessert elsewhere. Overall a good place to go to for dinner as it is quiet and you can have good conversations as the place is not noisy or crowded.
