Went with my wife on January 11, 2026. Besides this library being one of the most iconic in the US, it also sports a large inventory of modern american poetry. The basement has large selection of sociology, history, art and politics books which you usually do not find in large chain bookstores.
This bookstore is a living museum. Since 1953. One of the greatest visits in my SF traveling. To the owner: thank you so much for preserving this spiritual island.
An incredible bookshop where you can find the book of your dreams. It has everything you could possibly want in terms of reading material, whether you want to learn, escape, educate yourself, relax or get a thrill. The shop is very pleasant and the staff are very dedicated.
Exciting to finally visit the Beat Generation's gathering place and where Howl was published. The Beats were on a different trajectory than mainstream America, wild, selfish, sexually crazed, booze and drug driven. But they did create writings that will last through time. Good. Bad. And downright filthy. The Beats gathered here and at local bars, swapped stories, women and men. Their lifestyle remains among some, the bookstore delightful to visit. I am thankful I was able to go there and purchase a bag of good books. Though the Beats are but dust now they did light up lives, indulge in drugs, sex, and most survived. And ultimately left a trail of some very good literature.
Well this is the ultimate bookstore for all book lovers out there! Yes, it has a vast collection of books. Yes, there are three stores and a great variety. Yes, I was so lost between selves that I had to ask to locate a couple of books that I couldn't find in my home country (and boy, was I thrilled to have them!) However, most important thing for me is the smell: this intense smell of old books and wooden selves, causing a pure feeling of happiness!..
