Such a fun place! A bit of everything. My favorite place to stop by in Richmond. The staff is always kind and friendly. We picked up some sweets for the weekend yesterday and the young lady helping us couldn’t be nicer. Thank you!
You go into places hoping that bs won't follow you but today, it did. As I had reached the door, an older white woman appeared and insinuated she needed to go ahead of me. I hadn't even crossed the threshold yet. Because I'm grown and had reached the door first, I walk in front of her anyway. I go straight to the register to get some dipped Oreos. I'm at the register first, clear as day. And yet, bs and caucasity ensued. From behind me before I can even begin my order, this same woman speaks over me to proclaim what she needs. What was the thing she needed so desperately to demand to go first into this store and be served before me on this Monday afternoon? A receipt. One, singular receipt. Even then, the clerk behind the register says nothing to me, doesn't even acknowledge me, and proceeds to print out her receipt. Satisfied that her uncouth ways still yielded her her request, she cheerfully walks away. It takes a beat for the clerk to acknowledge me still standing there, angry but knowing expressing it would feed into a stereotype we did not create. I was ignored twice, simultaneously, over a receipt. The clerk feigned what appeared as guilt but said nothing about it, because then she'd have to acknowledge what just happened; what she did and did not do. And that would make it real. I knew the day would come when I would experience the treatment a lot of Black/POC people have experienced with FTLOC. You just want a treat sans racism for once. But here we are. And they didn't even have the dipped Oreos. My last time every going into this place.
Absolutely amazing store! I love stopping in and I can always find a sweet gift for someone! My personal favorite is the variety of malted milk balls. I was disappointed this year in the fruit slices I got for Christmas. They were so sticky that they basically turned into a giant jelly fruit log in the box and I was unable to put them out in a pretty presentation for Christmas party.
I'm going to be one of many who sings this place's praises, but I will join in regardless - I adore For the Love of Chocolate. I first came as an older teen, and I have come back year after year for the truffles, the imported chocolate bars, the jelly bean wall, and the super fun odds and ends from across America's small candy companies. I always make a trip early December for stocking staffers, and I also dip in whenever I'm walking Cary Town on an odd weekend for a little treat. I highly recommend For the Love of Chocolate for any locals, as well as anyone coming in from out of town. There's treats of all shapes, sizes, and prices, so it's not dangerous even for the budget conscious, as long as you keep your eyes relative to the size of your stomach, hehehe.
This store has such a good variety of chocolate, I especially loved the Firdaus pistachio chocolate bar it was so yummy an rich and the flavors so perfectly together! I highly recommend trying it!
