Key Clinic insults their customers behind their thin doors...today I was called a "broke college student." I have been to Key Animal Clinic in the past, and today was the second time I saw Dr. Priya Dahanukar. The first time she was helpful but didn’t seem as compassionate toward my dog as the prior vet I saw there. Today, her entire demeanor was passive-aggressive and rude. I could hear her in the back hallway complaining about another customer because it was interfering with her lunch, and then I heard the female assistant call me a “broke college student” simply because I declined the extra shots and overpriced dog food they were trying to push on me right after telling me my dog’s blood work came back “exceptionally fine" in a tone of disappointment. I was there for almost two hours while trying to get to my final exam on time. My dog comes first, but most of that time was me just sitting and waiting for them to come back with scraps of information. I walked out to check out after hearing the assistant insult me behind the door, calling me a "BROKE college student" then followed by the vet asking if she gave me the list of $100+ dog foods from their sitting inventory and upset when her assistant told her I declined for the moment. The front desk clerk was kind and helpful but then Dr. Dahanukar and the assistant came out, scoffed at me out loud, and said we weren’t done which made me feel so uncomfortable. Dr. Dahanukar handed me the paper I had been waiting for which was just a recommended dog supplement but when I reached to grab it, she pulled it back rudely while talking to me with attitude. As a college student who rescued a shelter dog and was doing my “dog mom duty” by making sure my girl was okay after experiencing stomach nausea and throat thrusting, I was relieved and patient when her blood work came back good. What I don’t appreciate is being pressured into buying things my dog didn’t need, being talked down to because of my age, and being insulted and called “broke” simply because I said I couldn’t buy a $90 vitamin shot and $100+ dog food on the spot, after already paying $450 for blood work and other add ons. I am deeply saddened to have experienced such passive and blunt rudeness at a place that is supposed to be filled with compassion and love for animals. Pets should not be treated like price tags, and owners shouldn’t be disrespected for declining unnecessary add-ons.
I first met Dr. Shockey 8 years ago, having just moved to Lubbock. My dog Bella had a growth inside her mouth. Another vet clinic had told me just keep an eye. So I sought a second opinion at Key Vet Clinic. She declared it suspicious, likely cancer. She was right. She recommended a surgery to gift us 6 months. 6 months on the dot, Bella told us it was time to say goodbye. We were able to schedule an at-home euthanasia and had a very peaceful experience. Our current dog Hopper goes to Key for vet care. We have been very happy with the thorough and compassionate care from Dr. Shockey, Dr. Stangl, and Dr. D. The few times we’ve had an urgent vet issue, they’ve been able to fit us in. I am more than happy to wait a little longer at well visits if they are running late, as I know they likely extended the same care to another family with an urgent vet care need. They have helped us navigate her allergies. They support my desire to feed Hopper squeeze cheese during shots and blood draws. When she was a puppy, they welcomed happy visits so she would be more comfortable at the vet office. Our cat Darwin had always been a bit cranky. It can be embarrassing to bring a cranky cat to the vet. They were always very understanding and patient. They even have a dedicated cat exam room, so it won’t smell like dogs. In his senior years, they supported his vet visits with various levels of anxiety meds and sedation. One of my biggest fears was that he would not have a peaceful passing, due to his crankiness with handling. She walked us through what progressing kidney disease may look like, so we knew what to look out for. When the time came, once again, I was grateful Dr. Shockey and her vet tech team were able to provide our 17 year old cat a peaceful euthanasia experience. It’s important to me to have an established vet I trust, as it makes the stress of an injured or ill pet a little less, knowing you trust the vet’s recommendations. Through regular well visits, they get to know your dog and their health status, so they can navigate changes that come with age. At Key, my experiences have been positive from the reception to the techs to the vets.
Dr Shockey is the best! And the whole staff is kind professional and caring. I have one dog who is allergic to everything and 2 very old dogs and I always feel confident that they get the best care at Key Animal clinic.
Very disappointed and didn’t even have much of an experience. Brought my dog in at 4:30pm. The Clinic closes at 6:00pm. The lady at the counter told us that we would be better served to go to Live Oak animal hospital as they have later operating hours. In most cases, if a business shows hours of operation I would expect they would service in those hours. Fortunately they did well in advising us to go to another vet clinic that was more than helpful in seeing my dog. You should probably change to appointment only or change your hours of operation cause clearly there is a miscommunication of your services. I attach a picture of Live Oak to help you with advising future customers.
Key Animal Clinic is awesome!! We had our baby Stubby cross over to The Rainbow Bridge Monday with the help of Key staff. Thanks to them it was a good experience, complete with the chocolate cake he ate first. He was happy as he passed and that helped us feel so much better. Thank you Dr Stangle and Ethan. Thank you to all the staff for making a really hard day tolerable. We have been going to Key for over a decade and will continue to take all our pets there. The staff is very kind and helpful ❤️
