I had an extremely painful and traumatic experience at Tulsa Veterinary Specialists, and I feel I need to share it. My dog was battling bone cancer and passed away there 10 days ago. From the moment we arrived, I felt like the focus was not on care or compassion, but on pushing euthanasia. I have since read other reviews from people who felt pressured in similar ways, and sadly, I agree with them. During our visit, my dog was placed on the floor and given an opioid injection without my consent. I was told it was because she was in pain, but no one discussed this with me beforehand or asked for my permission. Whether my dog was in pain or not, I believe I should have had the right to be part of that decision. That moment has stayed with me and deeply disturbed me. At one point, while my dog was struggling to breathe, she was left in the room with me without active support. I knocked on the door asking for help, and no one came right away. Being alone in that moment, watching her struggle and not knowing what to do, is something that will stay with me forever. She was supposed to have surgery there just a few days later. I had taken her to their ER twice, hoping for help and stabilization, but instead I felt like every conversation was leading toward putting her down. I was told she had sepsis and that there was nothing else they could do, and no other treatment options were offered or discussed in a meaningful way. What hurt just as much as losing her was how everything was handled afterward. While my dog was still lying there, their office staff approached me about cremation decisions. I was in shock, and it felt cold and rushed. There was no sense of compassion or understanding of what I was going through in that moment. I didn’t even get the chance to take my girl home. I will always regret bringing her there. I truly wish she had been able to pass peacefully at home, surrounded by love and family instead of in a clinical setting where I felt like we were just another case number. This experience has caused me major trauma and has shaken my faith in veterinary care all over again. I hope the clinic takes a serious look at how they communicate with families of terminally ill pets, how consent is handled, and how compassion is shown in end-of-life situations. No one should have to go through something like this on one of the worst days of their life.
I’m so grateful that this place exists. It was close to a holiday and we were having to make some really painful decisions on my 17-year-old Yorkie, Chip. The vets are great, and ultimately found the issue to be something completely different than what he was referred there for. It helped make our decision, and they were absolutely the best at making sure he was comfortable at the end. They are caring, compassionate, and I’m so grateful to them.
I would give a zero if I could. Worst Animal Hospital ever. They should not be in business. Took my cat here at 3 am for a medical emergency. They took him back to look at him. Wasn’t back there a minute. Brought him back to us and said we could go home. He had a stroke right there and died. They didn’t try to save his life. They came into the room and said his heart stopped. Instead of trying to save him and worry about money after, they let him die and only started to try to do anything after we told them we would pay. They did not do jack to help. And I am pretty sure someone was laughing at the front desk when my partner and I were grieving because of them. They should be closed. They will not do their job unless they smell money.
These wonderful folks will be there when you need them!! Delightful operation given the circumstances of a sick or injured pet. Went in on Christmas Eve with my dog and a torn dew claw! Pulled the claw in literally 2 minutes and sent me home at NO CHARGE! A better Christmas gift I cannot imagine. Thank you and much love for all the staff at Oklahoma Veterinary Specialists! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Here’s a pic of my healed baby enjoying the sun!
Been to both the hospital side and the ER side. Both are great. I am not sure at all why the rating is as low as it is. Regardless, my experiences here over the years have been nothing but good, and usually exceptional. The specialist side is very good. We've needed help with digestive, cardiac, and eye issues, hematology, radiology, urology, and also cancer care. (Elderly cats, chronic illnesses, they just need more care.) They're all great. They are forthright and honest about what to expect, prognosis, and what testing can be done, and will work with you on figuring out how to do your best with what money you do have. They are also honest about it when they think a specific different hospital might do better with your case, which surprised me. They could have just kept taking our money while not knowing what they were dealing with. How would we have known different? Highly recommend the specialist side. The ER is amazing. My partner and I until recently had multiple cats, all older or chronically ill, who needed more frequent specialist and emergency care. I personally attract a truly uncomfortable, statistically unlikely number of cats that need urgent medical attention, which we treat, house, and find homes for whenever we can. So we know the ER side of this place very well. Last year, our three chronically ill boys, our brave, beautiful boys who were all already patients at the specialist side, had their time come within 5 days of each other. Smooch, Raleigh, Sid. I really don't know how to express the depth of our gratitude except to say that in the midst of this godawful, shocking tragedy, every single member of the staff were incredible. Especially with Raleigh, our nightlight -- dim, but without him how does one find their way? -- who had a urinary blockage. The doctor tried to clear it for 40 minutes, like, actively working ON HIM for most of that time. It was an incredible effort. Surgical treatment would have been very risky for him as he had cancer and very low platelets. We had to let him go. We did it in the treatment area backstage, not the usual nice quiet room, and it was so obvious from all of the various used bits and bobs, caps and wrappers and tubing, all the shambles of emergency treatment, that she had tried heroically. I actually hold tight to that memory, because it tells a story of love in the midst of tragedy. She'd had to put our oldest lad to sleep the night before. She knew. And she tried so damn hard for Raleigh. Since we have been here so often, and often been there for so long, I have observed how other patients and pets are treated. It isn't just us. I truly believe that these people do everything they can for everyone's pets. That is why you CAN sometimes be there for a long time if you choose to wait on site. Animals are evaluated and stabilized IMMEDIATELY on admittance to the back, you can trust they will be safe during that time. We have done it so, so often. We are never afraid to. Goodbyes suck. Emergencies suck. They suck less here.
