Huge thanks to Gus and his team for always coming through with the best paint work in the Houston area. Proper Prep is quick to respond and easily the most detail oriented painting service we have found to help handle our outdoor and indoor projects. Highly recommend.
I have used Proper Prep Paint on two different projects and I feel as though I have a brand new house. Gus was very helpful and professional on my projects. Emily and Sloan gave me great designer and color advice. The painters Klen, Tony & Damien were professional, friendly and did a fantastic job painting. My last project is my kitchen cabinets in which I won’t want anyone else but Proper Prep Painters.
I hired Proper Prep to paint some metal racks for my machine shop. The process was straight forward and easy - Gus guided us through the right products to use and quoted it out a few different ways so we could see pricing for different scopes. They arrived on time and completed the project in the anticipated timeline that they set. Esteban and the guys did a good job on the prep work protecting my concrete floor.
I hired Gus of Proper Prep to repaint the display cabinets in my store. These cabinets are not just furniture; they are the centerpiece of my business and the first thing customers see. Gus reviewed a sample cabinet, assured me he could match the quality, and provided a thorough first quotation. That quote included a critical line about using BIN shellac primer to prevent wood bleed-through. His price was higher than others, but when another company admitted they weren’t qualified and refunded me in full, I trusted Gus’s apparent knowledge and attention to detail and gave him the job. Unfortunately, the second quotation he sent told a different story. Although most of the prep work had already been done, the price was almost the same as the first, with only a token discount. More importantly, the specific line about addressing bleed-through with BIN shellac primer was missing. When major bleed-through appeared on the finished cabinets, Gus used that omission to deny responsibility and told me he would only fix it if I paid more. Based on the rough sanding, poor filling, and overall finish I received, I doubt the result would have matched the promised sample even with additional payment. The wall painting was equally disappointing. Gus and his team returned multiple times to correct problems, but the issues never improved. Finally, he offered me a choice: let him attempt the wall again or accept a $250 refund. Since every problem I experienced came down to poor preparation, I no longer believed they were capable of completing it properly. I accepted the refund, but I would gladly return it if the cabinets, the focal point of my store, had been done right in the first place. I don’t doubt that Gus is knowledgeable, and I am willing to believe his intentions were good. But good intentions don’t equal capability. A professional company must know its limits, and in this case, Proper Prep failed at the very thing their name promises. My experience suggests they may be able to handle smaller, simpler projects, but they were not equipped for a detail-driven job like mine. The takeaway: Never assume a second quotation is as reliable as the first. Even if both look detailed, one missing sentence can completely change the scope of work and leave you with no accountability when problems arise.
Proper Prep Painters did such an awesome job repainting several rooms for us! They were professional and really quick with their work. They were able to repair cracks from the building settling, and patch holes from previous wall hangings and blinds. Super nice and easy to work with! I highly recommend!
