We were excited to go to this comedy show as it was right next door to our hotel. It was the most bizarre comedy show we have ever seen. Regret going on our last night in Austin and would have chosen something else more enjoyable. Most of the audience (that consisted of maybe 20 people) appeared to be friends/family of the people performing. If we could have left without it being awkward, we would have!
Andy led a two hour improv class / team building session for us at my work. He was amazing and made the whole experience so much fun. It really brought everyone out of their shells—even the introverts! Andy was so genuine and easygoing. And we learned some valuable insights about our team interaction as well.
We took our 8 and 3 year old to see a children’s improv show “Bluish”. It was pretty funny to watch as an adult (seemed like two child improv students, their moms, and a handful of improv vets to help hold it together) and there was time for the kids to get up on stage and act out some things. Very fun, good drink options. If you’ve never been before, give it a shot soon as they are moving out of their congress avenue location to a south Austin location at the end of the year.
I’m writing this with a heavy heart because I truly loved being part of improv at the Hideout Theater. Thursdays became a special night for my husband and I; we looked forward to class every week. Unfortunately, our experience was cut short in a way that has left us both devastated after 7 weeks of class meetings. Without any prior warning, conversation, or chance to address concerns, my husband was removed from class by the teacher Danielle DaVerona. We were told it was because “people in the cohort felt uncomfortable”and also that in the last Level 1 class (him joking about wanting to take a nap) was considered “disrespectful. ”Ironically, his joke was actually used as a teaching moment when someone made a callback to it, and it turned into something delightful for the class and for the teacher to talk about. To have that same joke later used as part of the justification for removing him felt completely out of line. Wanting clarity, I personally and directly reached out to every single person in our cohort after the incident and every reply I received, except from one person, was warm, kind, and expressed that they missed us or were sad we were gone. This makes it even harder to understand why such a drastic step was taken without a second chance, a one-on-one conversation, or even direct feedback. What hurts most is the way it was handled. One moment we felt part of a community, and the next we were excluded, without even the dignity of a one-one discussion before the deciwas made. This kind of secrecy and lack of transparency doesn’t reflect the values of openness, collaboration, and growth that improv itself teaches. We are deeply disappointed in the educational leadership, including Andy Crouch, for letting us fall through the cracks without doing his due diligence and letting Danielle's sensitivity get the best of her and her professionalisism. My husbamd is a very respectful, emotionally mature, and a kind person. He didn't deserve to be cast out from the group without warning, and for that reason , I chose not to stay. This experience has not only been painful but has tainted the way we now feel about improv and the community at the Hideout. It’s going to take time to heal from the sense of betrayal and exclusion from Danielle, someone we admired and looked up to. I share this not out of malice, but because I hope the theater takes this feedback seriously. Students deserve honesty, directness, and a chance to grow. Cutting people out without dialogue undermines the very spirit of what improv is supposed to stand for.
The Hideout blew us away! This improv show was hands-down one of the best we’ve ever seen. The performers were incredibly talented and had the whole room laughing nonstop all night. You could really feel the energy and creativity from the stage—each scene was funnier than the last. At just $15 per person, it felt like a steal. Honestly, I would’ve paid double for the kind of experience we had. The staff was welcoming, the vibe was great, and the whole night was just pure joy. Can’t wait to come back!
