First time visiting despite living 15mins away my whole life! I will say it’s more and also less than I was expecting. Vastly empty even on open and well into the midday. So many areas of the museum are under renovation and or closed for events. Considering the museum is small I wish it wasn’t so, but also that might just be concerning the time frame I picked. Which was a random Thursday morning. Even more surprising no school field trips and such. The blurbs are somewhat interesting and some a little too casual than informational. The furniture throughout is very nice and aesthetically pleasing. A bit confusing at times to navigate even with the map, but nonetheless I enjoyed myself. The highlight I would say is the cafe on the first floor at the entrance. Great coffee and Barista’s, yummy pastries too. The staff of the museum are also very helpful and welcoming, including within the gift shop.
Really well curated museum. Perhaps because it is relatively small, each gallery/room/exhibit is so well done. For example, in the Ballantine house (which is gorgeous) there is a room with a billiards table. And there is an audio track playing softly the sounds of a game of pool being played. So you really feel immersed. In the mammals area there are some fantastic, interactive exhibits that made me sorry that my kids were now adults (although my daughter, now in college, still partook) you can draw and color a sea creature and have it appear animated on this HUGE 3-wall- wide screen. And there is a "cave" where you can identify different cave drawings. Everything worked really smoothly. And the technology enhanced rather than distracted from the experience. There is also a very nice gift shop!
Nice museum. The preservation of the Ballantine house as part of the museum is an interesting way to combine and preserve the historic house. The detailed woodwork was great to see. On the top floor of the museum there was also a piece from George Nakashima. I have seen pictures of his work before but it was the first time I saw one in person. The planetarium was unfortunately closed when I visited. I also really liked the colorful glassware.
Came to the Newark Museum of Art for their Art After Dark: Drip & Dagger event. This was my very first time ever getting to explore the Newark Museum of Art. My favorite part of the event was getting to tour the Ballantine House and getting to do the escape room during the event. They also have quite a few art installations to check out. Coming to one of there events was a good opportunity to see the Newark Museum. I noticed that they always have something going on at the museum. There are activities for the kiddos as well as adults. If you are looking for things to do around Jersey I definitely suggest checking out the Newark Museum of Art and looking at their social media page for upcoming events.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Must-Visit Gem in Newark — The Newark Museum of Art! 🎨✨ So, my cousin called me on a random weekday asking if I could do her a favor — be the auntie-on-duty and chaperone my niece’s school field trip since the parents weren’t available. I checked my calendar, saw a free day, and immediately said, “Yes, I’m in!” Come Wednesday morning, I met my niece at her school, hopped on the school bus with the students, and off we went to The Newark Museum of Art around 9 a.m. Everything was impressively organized — from check-in to the tour itself. The museum staff and tour guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about art and history. They walked us through each section, explaining the cultural background, artistic value, and historical stories behind every exhibit. I genuinely learned so much and gained a deeper appreciation for both global and local art. As someone who loves visiting art museums, I was amazed to see familiar pieces I’d once seen at the Atlanta Art Museum — right here in New Jersey! It’s like art finds a way to connect us wherever we go. The museum is very accessible and family-friendly. Parking was convenient, ramps and facilities were well-designed for visitors with disabilities, and all directions were clearly provided. Just a tip: book your tickets in advance, especially if you’re coming as a group of 10 or more. It saves you time and ensures a smooth experience. Due to privacy and safety, I didn’t take many photos inside since I was focused on keeping the kids safe, but trust me — the visuals, the vibe, and the educational experience are unforgettable. If you haven’t been, find time to visit The Newark Museum of Art. It’s a great opportunity to immerse yourself in art, culture, and history — and to truly understand the stories behind each masterpiece. Whether you’re a parent, educator, or just an art lover like me, this place is absolutely worth it! 💡 Highly recommended for school trips, families, or anyone looking to reconnect with creativity and culture right here in Newark.
