Profit over Pets! Plaza Animal Clinic is the most expensive veterinarian in KC. I’ve put up with it for 3 years, but a recent experience had me move to FMA on Rainbow, where I’m quite happy. The worst part is that Plaza Animal Clinic overcharges you when you are at your most vulnerable, and they don’t care. The Situation: My 55lb Golden Doodle was attacked in the throat by a German Shepherd. A Sunday ER visit to Mission Vet Clinic took care of the crisis with surgery and stitches ($900 for 5 hours). They were awesome! After that, they had me follow-up with my regular vet to change the bandage every few days. When Plaza Animal Clinic charged me $100 for 20 minutes for the first visit and evaluation, I paid it. Then, every several days I returned. Each time it took less than 10 minutes to change the bandage but they charged $100 each time. I price checked this at two different vets and was told $0 to $29. I asked to speak with the owner to negotiate the $500 for the five visits to $200. He didn’t care. He talked in circles to justify. When I told him about my price benchmarking, he didn’t care. When I asked for the logic of $100 for 10 min of help from a nurse, he didn’t care. He said time and who does it (a nurse) doesn’t matter. Basically told me to pound sand, despite the fact I have 3 large dogs and cat and have spent THOUSANDS with his clinic over the last few years. This is all about making money, not about care for the animals or customer care. A typical small clinic has $1.5MM in revenue and the owner makes $300k. A 10% increase in prices will drop $150k to the bottom line, thus increasing the owners take home from $300k-$450k. Why not take advantage of people’s love for their pets to get a 50% raise? FMA is 5 minutes away, has four Vets and is a family business. They are incredibly fair and transparent on pricing and highly skilled. I recommend them.
Very kind staff here that wants what's best for you and your pet. You also don't get the vibe here that you're being taken advantage of cost wise which has become so common with private equity buying vet clinics up. They're a business that has to keep the lights on, yes, but it's so comforting to not feel like you're being gouged.
We’ve been going to plaza animal clinic since moving to Hyde park. I don’t care if it was a quick visit, yearly, or calling with a question. They always have been so helpful. We recently put down our sweet girl. They helped me make the difficult decision, stood by my side, gave our entire family a shoulder to cry on. They were beyond sweet and I’m so grateful. I highly recommend the entire staff. We’ve seen several doctors and they all have been very knowledgeable, very kind, and never rushed any of our appointments! Your animal will be in good hands if you choose them!
Honestly not so great- I would say this place is mediocre / fine but not amazing. Overall they just seem to charge more and up-charge services maybe because of the convenient office location? I've been to other vet offices that are much more affordable and actually seem to know what they're doing. We brought our dog in and they conducted a urine test which we couldn't even get results on until the next day. However, they sent us home with medication for an assumed UTI before we even had results and wrapped in some additional medications plus food since she was vomiting too. Which is fine- but the whole process just felt like we were signing up for more than we needed before we had a true diagnosis. We declined the food and additional meds to save money because it just felt unnecessary. They called the next day to give results on the urine test- came back negative- so my next logical question is- why are we giving antibiotics if they aren't even necessary? I guess it will treat anything else that could potentially be going on but I certainly won't be returning here and honestly wish I didn't come in the first place but we just moved from out of state and hadn't established a vet yet.
Dr. Twig is conscientious, knowledgeable and puts you at ease even in difficult situations. All the veterinarians and staff there are compassionate people who genuinely care about your animal . Our dog had to have her leg amputated after complications from a leg surgery(not done there). It was difficult for us but Dr Twig helped us through the process. The staff is amazing . These are just the kind of people you want caring for your animal that is like family to you.
