This is a unique spot—the only winery on the Big Island. I visited for the first time in 12 years. Because of the local climate, their wines often blend grapes with local fruits, so they aren't your typical pure grape wines. The flavor profile generally leans towards the sweet side—even the ones categorized as "dry" felt more like "semi-dry"—but it is a very elegant sweetness that pairs perfectly with Hawaiian food. I highly recommend the tasting set at the counter. They let us try almost every variety with great explanations. (They even had a Japanese menu—Mahalo!). The young staff were attentive, smiling, and very kind. The modest vineyard surrounding the winery is well-maintained and lovely. Also, the bottle labels have changed since my last visit; they now feature beautiful photos of Kilauea Volcano at different times of the day. They are so artistic that you’ll want to display the bottles at home.
This place was worthwhile to stop during our traverse to Volcanoes National Park. Located not far from the Park, it was easy to incorporate into our itinerary. Their tasting room was simple but featured a nicely arranged and nicely kept area with standing high tables. There were some outside pavilions with tables available as well. Tastings were on a walk-in basis only. We came in toward the end of the day and, hence, it was not too busy. There were a few set tasting regimens available. My wife and I split a tasting and were favorably impressed. Our friendly server added to the pleasant experience. They also had some customizable small charcuterie boards available that allowed us to have a snack with our wine. Overall, this was a nice stop to complement our activities on the Big Island and it satisfied that occasional wine craving that we get.
5 Stars – Fantastic Experience at Volcano Winery Volcano Winery in Hawaii is an absolute gem and one of the most memorable stops we made during our trip. From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and genuinely enthusiastic about sharing their wines. They took the time to answer questions, explain the different varieties, and were more than willing to let us sample a wide range of wines so we could find our favorites. Their passion for what they do really shows and makes the entire experience that much better. The wines themselves are excellent—unique, flavorful, and unlike anything you’ll find on the mainland. Whether you prefer traditional grape wines or the more distinctly Hawaiian blends with local fruits and honey, there’s something here for every palate. We especially appreciated the relaxing outdoor seating, which offers a peaceful setting to enjoy a tasting flight while taking in the surrounding greenery and cool Volcano climate. It’s the perfect place to unwind. Another unexpected bonus was their cigar selection, stored in a well-kept humidor with a variety of quality options. It’s not something you see at every winery, and it added a nice touch for those who enjoy pairing a good cigar with a great wine. Overall, Volcano Winery delivers a fun, relaxing, and memorable experience. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the Big Island.
A very pleasant place where you can sample wine and buy local products. We were also delighted with the smoked meat served by the locals who had their own stand. We had a very pleasant time.
They offer a 7-wine tasting experience that includes both white and red wines. Most of their selections lean towards the semi-sweet to sweet side, making them a great choice for those who enjoy wines with a bit of sweetness. The staff does an excellent job of explaining each wine's unique characteristics, as well as the best food pairings to complement them. One interesting highlight is a wine they recommend for making wine ice cubes, which can be added to other drinks for a fun twist. If you're coming down from Volcanoes National Park, this is definitely a great stop to unwind and enjoy some unique local flavors.
