I stopped by Capitol Hill Books recently hoping to find a particular title, and honestly, that’s pretty much what shaped my whole experience. If you’re the type who loves browsing shelves and discovering new reads, this might be a much more fulfilling visit than it was for me — I didn’t find the book I was after, and I wasn’t immediately impressed. That said, I also don’t consider myself much of a bookstore person in general, so take this with a grain of salt. The space itself gave off a classic, tucked-away local bookstore vibe. Walking in felt like stepping into a spot that’s been around the neighborhood for a long time, with shelves packed closely together and a sort of “organized chaos” charm. For people who relish digging through stacks to find something unexpected, that atmosphere could be a real plus. But if you’re more used to big stores with tidy sections and easy browsing, it might feel a bit overwhelming or cluttered. Staff were polite and helpful when I asked, but since I was only there for one specific item, I didn’t get the full sense of what their recommendations or expertise were like for other types of readers. I noticed plenty of books and a variety of genres represented, which suggests there is more here than what caught my eye on the first pass. Overall, Capitol Hill Books seems like the kind of place worth exploring if you enjoy independent bookstores with character and don’t mind searching around a bit. Just don’t go with the expectation that you’ll definitely find that one specific title you came in for — I didn’t, and that shaped my whole visit more than anything else. But if you love the treasure-hunt aspect of bookstores, you might have a very different experience here than I did.
3 floors of used books and this bookstore has the tiniest bookshelf for romance books and NO historical romance. But they had a whole ROOM for mysteries. Very disappointed in the selection here.
this is truly one of the best used book stores in DC. Bought quite a lot of theory here, mostly far left. There is nothing far right as the store is completely woke, but it is not a problem since they have classics section and a huge fiction section with books on books and other perks. Last time I spent 80+ dollars here and will come for more!
This is such a cute and lovely bookstore, with both used and new books. There are books about almost every subject, spread over three floors. What makes this place even better are the witty signs on the shelves (see photos). Very recommended if you're in the neighborhood and want to have a laugh or to find a cool book!
A cozy bookshop in a pretty neighbourhood. Definitely a must-go if you are a booklover, or looking for secondhand / used books, or rare books. Even if you don't read, just check it out. I would even label this as a tourist attraction. For me, this is the best secondhand bookstore I have ever visited. Loved the vibe, the vast collection of books, and the labels that the owner put up (some of which were really funny). Few floors to explore, books sorted by genres. No space was spared, even the toilet was filled with books. Allocate a few hours to browse the books properly, you may find something special or rare. Price wise, I think quite reasonable, depending on the value of the books too.
