We went to Papalote for a birthday lunch and it couldn’t have been a better choice. Chef Michael Portley has created a menu that is clever, confident and genuinely delicious - inventive without being fussy, refined without being pretentious. Everything we ordered felt thoughtful, well balanced and beautifully put together. Standout dishes for us were the classic margarita (perfectly balanced and dangerously drinkable), the prawn tostada (fresh, bright and full of flavour), the baked pumpkin with all the trimmings (comforting and elegant at the same time), and the flan - who needs birthday cake? The space is stylish and contemporary but still warm and relaxed, making it ideal for a special occasion or a long lunch with friends. The staff were friendly, professional and attentive without hovering, and made the whole experience feel easy and welcoming. Altogether, Papalote feels like a restaurant with a clear point of view and a team who genuinely care about what they’re doing. A wonderful addition to Newcastle’s dining scene and somewhere we’ll happily return to.

We had such a lovely experience at Papalote. The food was so damn tasty - get the tostadas. The wonderful gal looking after our table was super lovely, answered all our questions and gave great advice. She was from Mexico so we also learnt a thing or two! Love the decor too. Will be back.
One of the best new additions to the Newcastle food scene! The food was all exceptional (I don’t like oysters, but I gave them a try and they were amazing). Really authentic Mexican food, great flavours & diverse menu without being super extensive. The cocktails and wine were amazing & cannot fault the service - even being a brand new venue the service was attentive & warm. Highly recommend to anyone planning a nice dinner out!
