Birdwatching at Fort Pulaski

The diverse habitats found within Fort Pulaski National Monument supports 200 species of birds, including songbirds, shorebirds, wading birds, and waterfowl. The numbers and types of birds found within the park change with the rising and falling of the tides and with the passage of the seasons. Large populations of both resident and migratory birds are present year-round, but the birds seen in the park depend greatly on the time of year. Cockspur Island is an excellent place to spot migratory songbirds in spring and late summer through fall, and waterfowl in the winter. Where to see birds Birds are everywhere on Cockspur Island from the historic fort to the marshes. Barn swallows can be found in the warmer months in the fort. Wading birds are in the marshes year round. Forested areas of the park also host multiple species of migratory birds. The park trails are excellent places to go to see birds. The North Pier Trail leads through a dense forest to the North Shore, where you will find shorebirds. The North Shoreline is a closed area. Do not go further than the North Pier. The Lighthouse Overlook Trail leads visitors past marshes, one of the best places to see wildlife. The Picnic Area Trail is through dense foliage, perfect for nesting birds.
