Home to a treasure trove of native Hawaiian species, Kīpukapuaulu is sometimes referred to locally as "bird park". For the patient and observant visitor, this stand of older forest may reveal rare and endangered plants and animals. A 1.2-mile (1.9 km) loop hike will take you through a "kīpuka", an area of older vegetation surrounded by a more recent lava flow from Mauna Loa.
