During the winter months, the C&O Canal may accumulate enough snow for winter activities like skiing and snowshoeing. Visitors can step out onto the towpath and enjoy a short or multi-mile journey along the historic canal. The best spots for cross-country skiing are likely to be in the western portions of the park where elevations are slightly higher.

Safety Regulations The speed limit on the towpath is 15 miles per hour. Please travel single file and stay to the right. Give an audible signal when passing, pass on the left, and only when it is safe to do so. Wheelchairs Wheelchairs and similar devices built specifically for mobility disabilities are allowed on the towpath. The towpath is a flat, gravel path.

Yes — Please leash and control your pet, and remove pet waste. Pay special attention to other travelers, especially those approaching on bikes, to avoid injury.
