Bird Watching at Fort McHenry

Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine

Fort McHenry's water front makes for an ideal birding location. Learn how birders can come enjoy their hobby within the park!

Baltimore City boasts over 260 species of birds that frequent the area both year round and seasonally. Although famous for the eponymous state bird, the Baltimore Oriole, the city and Fort McHenry are frequented by a great variety of bird species. Most often visible in the park are Canada Geese, but also several species of ducks which can be seen year round. Impressive birds of prey frequent Fort McHenry's waterfront in search of food. Osprey are known to regularly fly overhead with fish in their talons, and hawks often perch in trees to eat their latest catch. Visitors might even be lucky enough to spot the American Bald Eagle flying over the fort in view of the large American flags blowing in the wind. Visitors interested in birding are encouraged to bring binoculars and enjoy the spectacular views of the many birds in the park from a safe distance!
