Bicycle Colton's Point to Port Tobacco
Thomas Stone National Historic Site
For those seeking to explore Southern Maryland or to travel the extent of the Potomac Heritage NST corridor, bicycling and paddling, combined with some short hikes, are the best self-powered ways to experience the area. The 38-mile bicycling route between Colton's Point/St. Clement's Island Museum and Port Tobacco (or vice versa) is part of the Adventure Cycling Association "Tidewater Potomac Heritage" map set.
This route works in both directions and provides a self-powered means to explore this portion of southern Maryland. Colton's Point includes the excellent St. Clements Island Museum and a departure point, by boat, for St. Clement's Island State Park. Port Tobacco is an historic district approximately two miles from La Plata, with lodging, a marina and small boat launch, restaurants and Thomas Stone NHS in the vicinity. Cyclists will want to enjoy the view from the Chapel grounds within Chapel Point State Park and consider a kayak trip on the Port Tobacco River.
