Birding At The North Gate Area

Visitors can choose to park at the North Gate or Haskell Gate Parking during the spring and summer when visiting the northern section of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. In the winter, parking is limited to the plowed parking area at the North Gate. Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument provides important and diverse breeding habitat for many species of birds. Birding is an activity that can be enjoyed year-round. Some birds that can be seen at the monument are warblers, sparrows, waxwings, loons, bald eagles, owls, spruce grouse, and many more! Many migratory birds leave the monument in the winter, but birds like the spruce grouse, boreal chickadee, and Canada jay remain. Follow the river for as long as you please! Enjoy a picnic at the scenic Oxbow Picnic Area and/or continue further into the monument. What Can I Do With My Observations?
