Feldtmann Loop Section 3: Hike from Siskiwit Bay to Island Mine
Isle Royale National Park
Comb Carnelian Beach and relish in the remnants of the historic Island Mine on this section of the Feldtmann Loop. Mileage: About 4.3 miles
About this Trail Mileage: About 4.3 miles Changing trail conditions require a map, compass, and navigation skills Rocks and roots on trail Trailheads Siskiwit Bay Dock Windigo Rock Harbor via Greenstone Ridge Trail This trail begins with a walk along Siskiwit Bay with a crossing over the Big Siskiwit River via a large bridge. Often the actual trail is washed out due to beaver activity forcing hikers to walk along the rocky beach (the bridge still needs to be utilized). The beach reaches the treeline and a short trail helps hikers cross Senter Point—a peninsula jetting out into Siskiwit Bay. The trail follows Carnelian Beach until a trailhead appears signifying the path turning inland. This is the last opportunity to purify water on this section of trail. The trail passes an old well and later a part of the historic Island Mine. There will be a stack of rocks and behind this rubble is an old steam engine back in the woods. This is an excellent spot for a water break to take in the remnants of humans past on the landscape. The trail continues to move up and down towards the Island Mine Campground.
