As you visit River Raisin National Battlefield Park, you are visiting hallowed grounds and the final resting place for many fallen warriors and soldiers. As you walk, read the historical markers, and contemplate the past, consider that Southeast Michigan witnessed the greatest defeat for the United States in the War of 1812. The largest number of Prisoners of War to ever be taken by a foreign power from within the United States and the largest number of American soldiers killed during any single battle of the War of 1812 occurred here. In contrast, the Battlefield is the site of the greatest victory for the largest Native Nation alliance to ever assemble in the United States to defend their lands against foreign invaders. A victory, that would ultimately lead to the forced removal, relocation and assimilation of all Native Nations within the continental United States.
