From the time of Julius Caesar to the nineteenth century, the way humans transported goods changed very little. Beginning with the Industrial Revolution, a revolution in transportation also occured. Over the next century and a half, people went from using vehicles pulled by animals to leaving this planet and going to the moon. The Kelly House Museum of Transporation tells this story. Located in the beautiful Blackstone River State Park in Lincoln, RI, visitors can tour the museum and learn more about the evolution of transportation at this site. The exhibits begin by talking about the natural water crossing which had been used by centuries by indigenous peoples, then the early road system, the Blackstone Canal, the Providence and Worcester Railroad, the modern highway system, and the production of beta cloth for the Apollo Mission Spacesuits which was manufactured in the Ashton Mill. Once done touring the museum, visitors can walk around the grounds, check out our pollinator garden, and read the interpretive waysides along the Blackstone Canal and the Blackstone River. Stop by the recreated historic barn, just down the old towpath from the museum to see more interesting exhibits and speak to a Park Ranger. The museum is operated seasonally from April 1 - October 31. Check the Park's calendar for events and more information about operating hours and seasons.
