Exhibits at the Casemate Museum chronicle the military history of Fort Monroe.That history begins with colonial Fort Algernourne, built in 1609. It ends in 2011 when the last major command at Fort Monroe departed. The museum features the room where Jefferson Davis was held briefly as prisoner following the American Civil War. Exhibits also highlight the 1861 “Contraband of War” decision. Get your free museum ticket at the Fort Monroe Visitor & Education Center. The Casemate Museum is within the stone fort.
