Ranger's Choice Battlefield Walks

Manassas National Battlefield Park

These programs examine unique portions of the battlefield landscape and story ranging from battle actions, civilian stories, and the memorialization of the park landscape. Programs may cross rough/uneven terrain. It is strongly recommended that visitors bring plenty of water, appropriate seasonal clothing, and sturdy hiking shoes.

Join a Park Ranger for a special guided tour or talk on a range of topics related to the Manassas story. These free programs take place daily at 1:00PM. A schedule of program topics and locations is posted below and will be updated on a biweekly basis. Check back in the days before your visit to find out what topic will be covered during the program! Program Schedule July 30 - August 12 Sunday, July 30 The Unexpected Discovery at Manassas Join a park ranger for a discussion on the 2014/2015 discovery of the first surgeon’s limb pit found on a battlefield in North America, which revolutionized the field of battlefield archaeology. Program begins on Henry Hill Monday, July 31 Deep Cut Walking Tour Join a park historian for a special walking tour in the footsteps of the largest Federal attack of Second Manassas. Meet at Tour Stop #7, Deep Cut Tuesday, August 1 The Aftermath of First Manassas Join a park historian for a walking tour focused on the aftermath of the first major land battle of the American Civil War and the effect it had on the civilians, soldiers, and the land itself Tour takes place on Henry Hill Wednesday, August 2 Deep Cut Walking Tour Join a park historian for a special walking tour in the footsteps of the largest Federal attack of Second Manassas. Meet at Tour Stop #7, Deep Cut Thursday, August 3 From Vortex of Hell to Memory: The 5th NY Monument Join a park ranger to learn more about the experience of the 5th NY Infantry on the afternoon of August 30th, 1862. On this short, 45 minute walk, discover what happened to the 5th NY during and after the battle and how they came together to remember their fallen comrades decades later. Tour begins in the parking lot at Tour Stop #9, New York Monuments. Friday, August 4 Where are they now? Burying the dead of Manassas Join a park ranger for a discussion on the post-battle and post-war disposition of the dead from both battles and the post-war commemorative landscape. This program will share visuals of a myriad of other cemeteries all over Virginiaand the nation where notable Manassas names are resting in peace and also many of the mass graves where hundreds of soldiers who were wounded in the battles later died in a war-time hospital further removed from these fields of battle.
