When we walked into the restaurant, they seated us at the bar, but the bar was quite high and the stools were really low, which felt uncomfortable. I ordered ceviche, and it came out surprisingly sweet—I was expecting that usual sour, limey flavor, but it just wasn’t there and I really didn’t like it. The sushi had truffle oil, but I could barely taste any truffle at all. Besides that, we ordered chicken katsu, and it was honestly quite bad as well. I have no idea how this place has a 4.9 rating. It’s a newly opened restaurant, it looks chic inside, but taste-wise it really didn’t pass my standards. Plus, I ordered a salad and it came super late. On top of that, there was only one waiter working, and when I asked for water, it took forever to arrive. I was practically choking on what I ate. I also tried the beef skewers, and they were undercooked and had this red marinade that just didn’t appeal to me. I was quite disappointed because the reviews looked good, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend it beyond an average place.
Our party of 2 came during their soft opening when they didn’t offer reservations yet. Thankfully there were still a few tables for 2 still available though we came at around 6pm on a weekday. We really enjoyed our experience! PARKING: just with any other Hillcrest establishments, give yourself some time to circle around for street parking. ENVIRONMENT: located at a corner, easily seen. There were bar seats, many 2-person seats which can be pushed together for a larger party, and a larger table in the corner. The 2-person tables are very close to each other, similar to other sushi places. SERVICE: Divine was our server and was very attentive and personable. Our food came out in a timely manner. FOOD: We shared the following items and it was the perfect amount of food for us: -Uni ($20): 2 pcs; served with a generous amount of fresh uni -Salmon Crispy Rice ($14): 4 pcs; great to share -Classic Nigiri Set ($20): 6 pcs -Beef Skewer ($10): 2 pcs, marinated brisket, comes with sauces -Mr. Miyagi Roll ($17): topped with salmon that melts in your mouth OVERALL: Our party of 2 had a great time in Dashi and I’d recommend this place!
I totally see why this place has a 5 star rating and is always packed. The menu has an extensive fish selection, unique items, and the preparation/presentation is well done. The prices are reasonable for this location. The miso soup uses red paste and has a rich flavor that's not watered down. The short ribs are infused with whiskey, something I've always wanted to try. They give you a good amount of meat too. The servers are very busy, but it's worth your patience. Many many restaurants have tried to make it in this spot. I think Dashi is the restaurant that's finally going to stay for years to come. Excited to try the rest of the menu.
Found my new favorite sushi place in San Diego. The food was made to perfection, our server Karan was attentive and gave excellent customer service. All of the staff were warm and welcoming, and the vibe here is great! I will absolutely be a regular. It is a popular place so expect a bit of a wait, or try to arrive early when they first open.
The new place to get the best sushi in San Diego has arrived in style and delivered in every way. Go now you’ll be happy you did. By the way I’ve seen that spot be a lot of different things and I think this is one that I really hope sticks. I think that what you guys did overall with the design looks amazing and aside from that you guys did a great job hiring wonderful staff and creating unique and delicious menu items. I can’t wait to try them all!
