We went to Kurama to celebrate my cousin’s 18th birthday with a group of 16, and the entire experience was terrible. We notified the waitress that my husband has a shrimp/shellfish and mushroom allergy and asked if his food could be cooked in the back. They said no — then cooked his salmon right next to scallops. After we complained again, they finally agreed to prepare it separately, but his food didn’t arrive until after 10 of us had already finished eating. We asked for water refills that never came. They brought my husband soup with mushrooms, my daughter wasn’t given a salad until we asked again, and my cousin received only 4 pieces of steak when she ordered steak, shrimp, and chicken. My food was so salty it was inedible. We even had to get our own to-go boxes and ask another waitress for water. My daughter requested only onions for vegetables and was given zucchini anyway — and the cook said “too late” when she reminded him. Paying $177.25 plus an $18.39 tip for this level of service and repeated errors is completely unacceptable. We will never dine here again.
If you're looking for a Japanese steakhouse in Durham, ask yourself: am I looking for the best AESTHETIC or am I looking for the best VALUE? If you're looking for aesthetic and are willing to wait forever to overpay for smaller portions of comparable-to-worse food quality but you wanna be in a nicer room and take the nicest selfie to post online after, go to Kanki. If you want huge portions of great food after a short wait and are willing to be in an older building with a lower ceiling + some smokiness issues that's filled with kind servers, great bartenders, and phenomenal chefs (shout out to Joe!) - go here and don't look back. Love this place!
If I can give a zero star, I would. Right after we enter the restaurant, the air is filled with smoke - not a nice smell from the hibachi, but burnt smell! Was thinking.. uh-oh did the chef screw up and burnt the food?! We have it a try anyway and ordered shrimp and scallops hibachi. For a $30 set, I expect to enjoy myself. Disappointment hits once food served, a chunk of burnt bean sprout on my plate. Had high hopes for the scallops (this is what I paid for right???). Scallop tasted nothing but salty! VERY VERY SALTY. Does the kitchen only has one seasoning - soy sauce?!! Shrimp is not fresh. Fried rice is tasteless. Bathroom floor and doors are sticky! How did this place get over 4.0 rating? Feel sad for people who thinks it’s ok to eat here
Our first time trying this hibachi place I would say, it didn’t disappoint me in the aspect of food wise, was a big difference than other hibachi which is a good thing. I had gotten an emperor dinner. My food was cooked perfect, the food was amazing and great. My chef was an amazing person, but the waitress not the best I started with one person and ended up having another person providing our drinks, waitress was not very attentive, I didn’t see any sushi in the menu which I had to even ask if they had, which then they provided a different menu just for sushi. My drinks, sushi and food was great don’t get me wrong. I just feel the waitress should be more tentative to their table. I would recommend it just because if the food and the chef. But not for the waitress and the service I got from them.
The place is old and dungy. The cook from El Salvador did a great job, and food was good. I would rate him at 5 and the venue at 1, thus the 3 star rating. Cocktail was okay and the second one I ordered, although it was strong, it was not made with Patron, as it was supposed to be. Most of all, cleanliness was a concern. They cleaned the cooking tables, but not so much the serving tables. While my friends and I enjoyed ourselves, I would not go back.
