I met some colleagues for dinner this evening and we had a wonderful time. The wait staff were so helpful and attentive. Had an Old Fashioned to start off the evening. For food, I began with a cup of the Crab, Shrimp and Andouille Gumbo. The main course was an 8 oz. Filet (medium rare) and Garlic Mashed Potatoes followed by a slice of Pecan Pie for dessert. Clean, quiet atmosphere. Highly recommend!
Visited Char on a Saturday around 3 PM. No college football on TV, which made for a calm, relaxed experience. The atmosphere is excellent. Dark, cinematic lighting, red curtains dividing sections like a theater, subtle jazz music, and Huntsville-inspired metal wall art. The entry area creates a nice transition into the dining room. Carpeted floors help keep noise down, which I really appreciated. Conversation stayed comfortable. Service was outstanding. My waiter, Morgan, was professional, attentive, and never rushed me. The staff overall seemed genuinely happy to be there, well dressed, and calm. It showed. One small nitpick: white paper on white tablecloth slightly cheapens an otherwise polished setting. Nice attention to detail throughout. Warm side plates before ordering, hand-crank pepper grinder, and a solid bar menu. I was pleasantly surprised to see Oban Scotch available. The Char Old Fashioned with Woodford Reserve was well balanced and delicious, though the orange peel garnish looked sloppy compared to the rest of the presentation. Starters came out very fast. The Caesar salad was excellent. Ice-cold plate, super crisp lettuce, great homemade croutons, and well-balanced dressing. The gumbo was flavorful and very hot, but the rice felt underwhelming. Bread was extremely hot but a bit too soft inside. For the main, I had the 8oz filet. The steak was tender, perfectly cooked, and clearly handled by a skilled chef. A bit too buttery for my taste, but still worth the $50. Garlic mashed potatoes were watery and under-seasoned, and the collard greens were flavorful but too firm and not hot enough. Dessert was the biggest miss. Blueberry bread pudding had good flavor, but the temperature was inconsistent, with hot and cold bites, and the whiskey sauce was overly sweet without much whiskey punch. Overall, excellent atmosphere, top-tier service, and a great steak and Caesar salad. A few execution and presentation details keep it from being flawless, but it’s a strong spot for a relaxed, upscale dinner. I would definitely return, especially between 6–8 PM.
Everything about this place was fantastic. Come for the food. Enjoy the atmosphere. I will definitely come back here if I'm ever back in Huntsville. There was live music being played on a piano inside! It was an absolutely wonderful dinner. Thank you all for the entire experience.
The steaks were delicious. The ambience was not what I expected though. It was very loud and busy. Not what I would consider a romantic atmosphere. We made our reservation months ago for my birthday dinner and we were sat in the middle of the restaurant. Maybe if we were at a more secluded booth or table it would have made it feel more special.
Every time we go to Char we have a great experience: The service is exceptional and the food is amazing. We recently decided to try the crab claws and we are so happy we did. We got both the sautéed and fried and both were incredible. The sautéed crab claws were cooked in a creole butter sauce. The fried crab claws were perfectly cooked, not too much batter. We cant wait to have them again.
