How Professional Service Should Look My wife and I visited Haverty’s as our first stop in what would become a long day of furniture shopping. We were greeted by Missy, a longtime sales associate who set the gold standard for what professional furniture sales should look like. The Right Approach: From the moment we walked in, Missy demonstrated an intuitive understanding of respectful customer service. She asked what we were looking for, listened to our actual answer, and then gave us space to browse at our own pace. No performative empathy. No scripted rapport-building. Just genuine, professional service that treated us like intelligent adults. Mastering the Balance: Missy had a remarkable gift for timing. She stayed close enough to be helpful while giving us room to explore on our own terms. When she did check in, she offered genuine insights and shared relevant stories about the furniture without turning it into a hard sell. Her approach was consultative rather than predatory, which created an atmosphere of trust rather than pressure. The Experience: We genuinely enjoyed our time at Haverty’s. The atmosphere was comfortable, the pressure was nonexistent, and we never once felt like we needed an exit strategy. While we ultimately did not find exactly what we were looking for on this visit, the experience itself was so positive that we will absolutely return when we are ready to make a purchase. Doug expertly guided us towards choosing a beautiful and functional dining room table. It’s nice to have something that is built out of solid wood, not particle board. And a bonus that it’s American made. We’ve had the table for eight months, It feels good playing cards on or eating dinner. There are few things in life that are worth the sticker price these days. High quality furniture is one of them.
