In a city with an increasing number of fancy, not to mention expensive commercial fitness-focused boxing gyms- this is one of the few authentic gyms of it's kind still standing. If you're looking to grind, don't care for looking pretty, and actually wish to LEARN the beautiful game, this is the place. Personally love coach Rico's classes, maybe the only reason I have been a member for the last almost 2 years. Can be a little cliquey and you can feel overlooked sometimes but that's up to you and the classes you take. At the end this place keeps it real, I get what I need and that's what matters to me. Take it from a proud Sully member.
As one of the oldest boxing gyms in Toronto, it has become a part of the city’s culture and brings a positive, vibrant sporting spirit to the community. Head coach Tony, a Toronto heavyweight boxing champion in the 1990s, is humble, passionate, and has long offered free classes for kids. I truly hope this meaningful gym can continue operating well into the future and keep serving the community.
I used to train muay thai for about 3 years and have been drawn to boxing due to desire to become more technical and learn to overall move better, be lighter on my feet and understand the game of boxing. Before moving to little Italy, I did plenty of research and have trained in a little bit in Barcelona and Munich as well as in Etobicoke where my previous gym was (all Muay Thai). When I tell you that my movement and understanding towards striking has expanded drastically in the matter of few weeks with Ricco's and Tony's classes. The gym has an immaculate atmosphere, true spirit and great people. Literally as seen in the movies but in reality you either bump into cardio boxing gyms that are too clinical and for cardio moms or underdeveloped basements with horrible etiquette. Sully's to me is true gold standard. If you are new, don't be scared, this is a downtown gym, people come and go every single day - no one will think "check out this new guy". Unless you're slacking in the corner, the classes are proper and hard - if the ambient wasn't the way it is, I'm not sure if I'd keep going as I personally need a good atmosphere, a joyful third space where one can be one with the body and share this experience with great people. Boxing is too hard to be done at crappy place with crappy people. Sully's is an absolute gem, truly a staple!
I went to Sullys multiple times a week for about half a year and I can say I wasn’t fully satisfied with my experience. It seems to be a great place for youth who have school in the day and a 6:30pm boxing class to look forward to in the evening. I hope those kids keep going. Building fighters to compete in tournaments seems to be their bread and butter. But for the average person like myself who actually pays for their own membership and prefers to go in the day for the 12pm or 1:30pm classes, which are less busy with kids (which in theory should mean more opportunities to learn more by the trainers), I walked away feeling i didn’t learn much. Clearly Tony cares more about the larger classes and pays more attention to them. For someone who’s not trying to compete in some local cup and just wants to learn fundamentals and be able to defend myself, I didn’t get the support I was hoping for. The lack of personalized training was really disheartening and made me want to say “I’m done here” and find somewhere else. I’m much happier now where I am receiving the help I feel I didn’t get before. It’s a shame as I liked the people at the gym and think it could be great. But for the average mid day goer such as myself who wanted to avoid big classes, I felt I was being overlooked and wasting everyone’s time. Myself included. I knew at the end of my last membership I wasn’t going to renew. I hope whoever reads this takes this constructively as there’s potential for it to be great for adults like myself. Just wasn’t during my time there.
I cannot recommend Sully’s enough. They’re a fantastic gym if you’re looking for intense conditioning and are interested in boxing at varying levels. But it’s also more than that. The community I found at Sully’s is something I haven’t found at other gyms. It’s a really special and welcoming place with extremely knowledgeable and experienced coaches. Special shout out to Tony who has been so patient with me during my time at Sully’s. He’s one of a kind.
