The managers at the Austin store did an excellent job of cleaning up some mistakes made by one of the San Antonio stores! I will definitely be coming back. I also love that they carry so many network and cabling parts for repair rather than replacement mentality. Professional or not, great place to shop.
We are in town for the day and stopped by to see what networking gear they offer. The store is well laid out, the staff is helpful (when needed), and the have CAT 6A cabling along with the 10gb switches.
For years I’ve suffered through Fry’s (RIP), ordered from Monoprice and prayed, or just overpaid at the big-box stores. Then someone on a job site mentioned Altex, and I figured I’d give the San Antonio location a shot last week. Walked in expecting the usual chaotic contractor warehouse vibe, but nope, place is spotless. Like, weirdly clean for a store full of resistors and heat-shrink. Parking lot is huge (no circling like at the Bandera location of certain orange stores), and the entrance is right off the front row. Zero hassle. Inside felt… moody? Lighting is definitely dimmer than your average retail joint. At first I thought a bunch of fluorescent tubes were out, but after thirty seconds it honestly felt kind of cool, almost like a tech cave. Everything is well labeled, aisles are wide, and you can actually move a flat cart around without doing that awkward sideways shuffle.
Just went to check this place out since it was near my house. They have a lot of Kool electronic equipment and tools. Pretty much anything you would need for a home office and setting up entertainment equipment at home. definitely go check it out. A very nice electronic Oasis near by.
This place is a dying niche type of store. Electronic stores are becoming a thing of the past with disposable apple iPhones and the constant hardware requirements to use Microsoft's Windows, forcing consumers to buy new or get left without security updates. Altex is the place you go to find the equipment you need to actually do repairs and infrastructure low voltage installations. The selection of merchandise is fair and the prices are reasonable for something you just need right now and can't wait for Amazon to figure out where your package ended up. Plenty of parking and very easy access to the building. Very clean establishment but it did seem a bit dark in the building itself. Low lighting was a shock at first but quickly felt atmospheric and pleasant. The only complaint really is the lack of human interactions. The employees were there and friendly enough, not rude at all, just a bit stand offish. Waiting for you to ask for help but not actively participating in the store employee, customer dynamic that one might expect from a hardware store. That being said, I walked in for a soldering tip, found what I was looking for by asking an employee as I entered the building and got directed to its location promptly. I looked around the store, paid and exited. Will definitely be returning.
