This is a vintage multi-vendor market with prices set by the vendor. This is not a new concept. And like it or not, vintage prices are inflated in markets where people like to wear vintage. Go figure. If it sells, then the price is appropriate. It’s not a thrift store! What you are paying for is one or more individuals’ curation efforts. If that doesn’t jive with you, Red Light, 2nd Street, Crossroads and Buffalo are down the street and tend to be priced a little more evenly, since they are governed by store picking policies and the clothes come to them. Or do some hunting yourself, and head to an estate sale, goodwill or L’Arche. They are different beasts. That out of the way. House of Vintage seems to hit a pretty good middle road for me in terms of quality and price. Sure I don’t love every vendor and there are some overpriced things, but there were more than a handful of good finds for a price I thought worth paying. Expect a solid hour or two of browsing here, and it will actually be pretty rewarding. One thing that really bothers me is a lack of mirrors throughout the store. Like, why? If I want to quickly try on a jacket or overshirt or a hat, it seems absurd to have to run back to the fitting rooms, and potentially wait in line just to see how it looks on me. I would have few complaints about the store if they changed the mirror thing! I enjoyed the two different radio stations for the different halves of the store. It made for a different vibe in each one.
Really wish I could rate this place higher, because I really enjoy the idea of having the separate vendors areas! I just feel like this place is pretty speedy for a "thrift store" and it feels like some of the staff is passive aggressive, almost like me and my friend were annoying her with our presence just because we were buying things, very off-putting, really hoping this was just a bad day for the staff member and not an everyday thing.
They have two entrances, didn’t think much of it till it became an issue later. Things are pretty overpriced considering it’s hand picked from Goodwill vibes. I think they have some idea that cutting off/messily cropping the bottom of a fraying polyester shirt makes it hip and worth more? Many items have literal dust on them, makes you feel like you need to wash your hands after touching most of it. I had some things in hand and was making my way into the second room to purchase when some kind of security guy rushed up to me saying they have to lock my bag up. Apparently they have a “no bags policy”. I didn’t come in the special door with the sign so I didn’t see it. I saw plenty of other people with their big purses all over the store. Apparently my tote bag was too much. They won’t guarantee the safety of your “bag”, so i decided not to buy the $80 worth of clothes I was considering. Oh well, not going back. I don’t work long hours all week to be criminally profiled and treated as such on my day off.
The biggest issue I have with this business is that there are no customer restrooms. For as large as this place is and as popular as it is, you would think they would have at least one - even if you need a key to get in. The place is expensive and it's difficult to find parking. However, it is also creative, has cool vintage items, and the staff are friendly. Over all, low stars because the cons outway the pros for me. But all right for a quick stop if you're in search of a unique vintage gift.
So the value of this thrift shop, you are just not going to find it. It's way too much not only for this city, but for what it's worth. But since I spoke to parker and there is a lot of need for these clothes over seas and people come here and buy them. Psh I say go for it. With THAT being said, I still had a great time here. Gotta be honest up front. This was one of the two stores I wanted to visit. I can imagine how poppin this can be. I came during a slow season thank God, I was able to snag a couple of items. This place for sure is easy $$$ plus. I love the choices i selected and they are timeless pieces I found. Can't be mad. My only issue is the parking, I found a parking spot right in front, If theres like more than 10 cars I can imagine I have to park a couple blocks away to find a spot. Other than that, cool experience for my first time.
