⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Smithsonian American Art MuseumClick to open side panel for more information and National Portrait Gallery are absolute must-visits in DC! We spent about 3 hours walking through and admiring hundreds of masterpieces from all kinds of schools and techniques. The place is fairly big and houses some incredibly beautiful and interesting pieces of art. Highlights of the visit: Stunning Atmosphere: The central courtyard is beautiful and provides a space where you don't feel pressured to look at the art; you can just let it come naturally. Diverse Exhibits: The art installations on display are so varied, ranging from classic portraits to modern multimedia pieces. Great Accessibility: It’s completely free to enter and stays open until 7:00 PM, which is perfect if you want to visit after other museums close. Convenient Location: While it's in a busy area, there are plenty of parking garages located right around the building. Whether you are a serious art critic or just looking for a peaceful place to spend an afternoon, this museum is a fantastic choice.
This place is awesome ! My wife and I walked through this gallery and enjoying every bit. The president Barack Obama portrait was so crowded I couldn't get a straight picture lol just from the side . Took a pic of president Bill Clinton's portrait but can't find it . Former first Lady Michelle portrait was beautiful .
Just a beautiful courtyard and a place where you don't really feel pressured to look at the art; you let it come naturally. The only thing is the cafe is a bit pricey. Other cafes in other museums are expensive becuase you're kind of far away from food. Since the museum is in Chinatown and next door to the Capital One Arena, just go out the door and find something else to eat. Though the cafe does serve wine which is convenient if you want that vibe.
We really enjoyed the Portrait gallery tour. Free entry, open until 7pm, lots of parking garages around the building. We spent about 3 hours walking walking and admiring hundreds of masterpieces from all kinds of schools and techniques. My very favorite was a portrait of D. Eisenhower. Also there are very impressive abstract and primitive works.
We were fortunate to catch this open on its last day before the government shut down. If you’re coming to Washington DC, it is an absolute must visit. There are so many amazing and historic paintings here with scattered sculptures in here and there. Some of them are one of a kind as in the cracked plate, Lincoln photograph. Additionally the center courtyard with its wave like steel and glass ceiling is a beautiful experience. It’s also one of the largest covered courtyards in all of DC.
